to each their own. personally, i'd rather have the feature and not use it than not have it and wish i did.
Think he is saying prolly not worth paying more for the one off times he wishes he had.

You can't control the sensors, or ask Alexa to read the temp. Have to use the Nest/Google app, major bummer.

There's ways to link all the ecosystems, but it's not easy (Raspi and Home Assistant) or cheap (Hubitat).

Have to say, after going through 3 of the third gen units, I may never buy another Google device again.

Each time, the WiFi chip burned out (known defect) and Google's support is absolutely atrocious to deal with.

They now want you to put a deposit down and hold onto it for months, only to send you a heavily used refurbished unit that will likely have more problems than just no WiFi.

On two of the units, the genius that refurbished them CLEANED the stock grease that makes the click wheel turn smoothly. They also came with bad batteries, stuck pixels, and a mushy click wheel from what I can only assume was the previous user hammering on the unit with their palm.

The other annoying issue is that their serial numbers are all tied to their respective colors, because Google didn't think to make the faceplate interchangeable.

So if your color is out of stock for refurbishment, you either get sent the wrong color (their customer service won't tell you this, so make sure you confirm) or you wait.

All of these break pretty quickly. Do a Google search on "There was a glitch" and read the endless amounts of complaints. 3 of mine have personally started doing this and complete resets have done nothing. Even the ipv6 solution didn't work for me.
Power surge can apparently easily fry the WiFi chip, happened to me.

Crazy the later models are unreliable. I looked through my receipts and I've had 2 1st gen models running w/o any issues since 2013 and 2014.

Similar experience here with age of Nest stats but one eventually died so I jumped ship to Ecobee. Great stat but the simpler, more intuitive Nest app I like better.

Damn what the hell do y'all do with your google hw? I have 2 google hubs, 3 google home minis, a google nest thermostat, 3 various non google assistant devices all with an iPhone as my primary mobile device. Not a single one has failed on me. Google > Alexa > distant 3rd is Siri. The nest thermostat was my favorite smart home device until I bought a Rachio smart sprinkler system. I have smart garage doors, smart front doors, thermostats, cameras, lighting systems, vacuums, TVs, switches, doorbells, basically everything.

Have 2 thermostats and 1 sensor. Honestly, lack of settings and options sucks compared to Ecobee. I wish Nest added an option to set temperature based on average between all devices instead of based on one device at a time.

I never knew thermostats could be so controversial. All I wanted was the ability to change the thermostat from my phone at night without getting out of bed, or to remotely set temps while on vacation to save a few $$ but then set back to normal before return. I've been pleased with my two Nest units, running for 3 years now, knock on wood….
