I think I'd still rather pay 50 bucks more for new at Costco but not bad deal.

Shockingly the 8GB M1's crush everything I throw at it. I have a dozen tabs open, Xcode with large projects and simulators running, and the fan has yet to kick in. All driving 2- 32" 4K monitors.

On the flip side my 2019 i7 32GB 16"MBP is a house fire waiting to happen.

No. But it does have free built-in Planned Obsolescence!

This is a Mac for the Unknowing Masses or those who don't do much more than Internet surf, watch YouTube, make amateur videos to send to grandma and use office suites. There are many on Reddit forums kicking themselves for buying one and not paying the extra for a 16GB.

For anything needing lots of performance power or folks who like or need to have several apps open at once, the 8GB is a huge choke point.
You must be building all your computers and mobile phones from parts. Did you build your tv too?

This Mac mini m1 will last easily 5 years.
Even the latest intel gen desktop costs more than $550 for same performance.

4 year warranty if you get it at Costco using their Citi card. Costco extends warranty by a year and then Citi extends another 2 years. Not to mention their 90 day no questions asked return policy.
Are you sure about the 4 years warranty from Costco on the Mac mini?

Is 8gb of RAM on this enough to have a few tabs of video open at the same time??

Which can be upgraded and components changed out. The Mac doesn't even have an SSD. It's got flash memory. If the motherboard dies, there goes your data. Poof! And no adding RAM. It's one big soldered monstrosity. Impossible to repair. All to make more profits at the expense of customers. Steve Jobs would never have allowed it.

Oh, and the $400 Acer Aspire I bought this year had an open drive bay and user-upgradeable SSD and RAM.

I've been a Mac guy since System 7. My mid 2015 MBPro may be the last Mac for me.
Yeah, but it's an Acer... Should aspire for something higher...

I highly doubt you are a mac guy. Does your Acer also runs MacOS with the replaced SSD and RAM. It is easy to spot a fragmented "PC" guy when all they can think of slapping more RAM and SSD to prevent the ever slowing down of their OS LMAO

See: "Definitely agree that the 8 GB RAM situation was a mistake -- I think I need at least 16 GB and I'm never going to buy another computer with less. Expensive lesson learned!"

The memory swap is extremely fast on the M1. The M1 SoC is very efficient with it's unified memory architecture. I'm not sure that a review of an Intel Mac directly comparable to these M1s. Ideally you'd go with 16GB but 8GB is much more capable than you'd think.

The Apple M1 uses a unified memory architecture. So 8GB memory isn't the same as 8GB memory in the Intel world.

There are YouTube video that benchmark the 8GB version versus the 16GB version if you're truly interested in the difference.

This article introduces the way Apple approach their CPU design and the way the unified memory works. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www....e.html/amp

I edited a feature length film with an 8gb M1 MacBook Pro this year. On premiere pro, running through Rosetta. Sometimes the scrubbing slowed down, but render times and general performance are faster than any computer I have ever owned.

I play a lot of Magic Arena as well. Ran the client at full graphics for hours and hours no problem. They are great machines.
