$1500 for no upgradability/ ssd replaceability and 8gb ram. $599 for the Mac Mini with the same configuration is acceptable but this is too much money to waste on first gen product. Either get something with M1 for under $1000 or wait for next gen.

The edge it has over the mini is the Retina display.
By the time you pair a Retina display with a Mac mini, you're at the same price as a comparable iMac.
Regarding "is 512 GB enough?" : Remember that USB-C / Thunderbolt is a wicked fast interface and you can expand your storage easily without much speed hit.
And regarding 8GB of ram : Remember that the M1 does more with less RAM. Look at any of the reviews with benchmarks and you'll see.
In general, it's only those who run a lot of multimedia apps that need the 16.
