This will not happen. Straight out. Why because all major broadband companies still have and operate earlier tech in the Nodes and Headends. If you don't know what that is, google it. Hence, the 3.0 which is relatively fully operational in XFINITY, Verizon, ATT, spectrum and Cox will be coherent in the next 5 to 6 years. But hey. Maybe your area is using different tech from all of us around the 🇺🇸. I do work for one of those companies and worked at Verizon for 4 years in their NY headend. 👍

I work for xfinity as a cable tech. These will work on xfinity. Only downside is it's refurbished. If Mac address of refurbished unit is still tied to an account, it will be an issue to add modem to your account.

Working in cable you still see the occasional docsis 2 modem in the homes... Doubt they will ban docsis 3 anytime soon. Also 16 channels should be good for up to 500mbps download if you pay for higher speed you should really look for more channel bonding or docsis3.1 if anyone is curious

Need one as backup but cannot think of other items to reach to $35. Any pre-order trick on Walmart experts?

I bought a used Docsis 3.0 16 x 4 modem few days ago for $20. I felt bad that I paid more for it but it looks like you can't get free shipping (unless you buy more than $35) or do pick up so I guess this is not that much of a deal.

1many cable ISPs remove modems as they go forward. Some Docsis 3.0 modems are already being removed from supported modems lists.
You're one of those "the glass is half empty" types, aren't you? 🤷

Since it's sold by Walmart, you'll have an easy return/exchange if it's either defective, you can't get your cable company to release it from the previous owner, or whatever. Dunno if where you bought it would be similar, but that peace of mind may be worth a few extra bucks to some.

Is this any better than the Arris one for $20 with the telephone option and battery backup?

Any reason to get this to replace a Arris Surfboard SB6141? The Surfboard works fine, though it is not listed on Xfinity's modem list. It is 8x4 channels, this one is 16x4.

As a xfinity cable tech, have you seen hacked modems for free internet ? I wonder how those work.

I bought one of these about 2 years ago and everyone was saying 3.0 was outdated then. With this and the mesh network I bought I've saved about $250 vs. renting. If I have to go to 3.1 in the future I'll cross that bridge. 3.0 is probably fine for the next four or five years however.

Could, but is that really likely anytime soon? I doubt it.
WoW removed it in April of this year, from it's list of approved modems.

Also on a SB6141 on 200/10 comcast internet. 200mbps is pretty much the absolute limit of 8x4 and you won't even hit your rated speeds most of the time. Less than 200? No need unless you plan on upgrading tiers in the future, or you want a backup?

For what it's worth I would have jumped on this deal if store pick-up was available, or I had other stuff to buy to get free shipping.

I am using this modem now with xfinity getting 480mpbs down on a 400mpbs plan. I just swapped to it after my old Arris 6141 died, I always keep a backup modem and these 16x4 ones for under 20.00 are great for that.
Plans 500mbps or less 16 channels is still plenty where I am. No reason to upgrade to 3.1 yet.
I'm like you, I always like to have a cheap cable modem in reserve. The only negative is if your ISP has already registered the MAC address with someone who returned the modem. Haven't had that happen to me yet.
