This is always going to be a trade off

You can't have all the extra apple stuff and get the same battery life as garmin

I'm really hoping the next apple has much better battery. If not I'm buying a new garmin with Bluetooth music

The band from bestbuy seems to be for 5S, which is smaller.

Its the Quickfit 22mm. The 5 plus is 22mm. Bestbuy's description is lacking...I googled the part numbers...

I just got mine in today..matches great with the 5 plus dlc. Now I just have to figure out how to size it or take it to a jeweler. Most likely I'll do it myself

I think the 5s is 20mm.

Just buy one of those watch band sizing kits and do it yourself. It's super simple and it will allow you to switch bands between watches for free.

any good for gym / resistance workouts? Biking? Skiing?
Just okay for resistance training IMHO. It does have a rep counter and it guesses the exercise okay but the set editor on the watch is tedious and so is inevitably having to edit the workout in the app after the fact.

If you're a cyclist or triathlete the Garmin Fenix line is fantastic. It's also great for regular Joe's that are into some occasional fitness, but if that is the case you would probably prefer an iOS or Google smartwatch.

That's my conundrum…I don't want to give up most of my Apple functions, so I'm amazed Apple hasn't just created a beefier, more sports-focused watch. I'm not a fanboy, but it seems like they could just emulate Garmin pretty easily and create a whole sports line.

I think their fashion/upscale vanity is getting in the way.
It's not apple's market. They only do mainstream large volume high end easy user experience. Garmin is focused on a small niche with lower volume. They both do well in their respective markets.

I totally follow that, but Apple is mistaken if they don't think there are a HUGE segment of customers who swap out for a Fenix on the weekends because the Apple Watch doesn't quite cut it for long hikes/rides/etc.

I'm not saying it's conspiracy or collusion, but there might be a little "professional courtesy" going on here. By most accounts, Garmin should have failed or been swallowed up years ago, but they are somehow maintaining niches in aviation, marine, outdoors, and fitness. Kudos to them for making it work and staying below the radar of the bigger fish.

I found Samsung Galaxy Watch seriously lacking when it comes to hiking. Like it can't display elevation gain, just plain elevation. Not sure about Apple Watch but battery life might be an issue. My ugly Garmin Epix has no issues tracking my 10hr hikes.

I mean Garmin is a $32 billion dollar company, so they are a pretty large fish in the consumer electronics world

For comparison, HP is 19 Billion, Dell is 74 Billion, Ford is $51 billion

Garmin also has a pretty tight lock on the sports market. If you're a runner and don't have an Apple watch, then you likely have a Garmin Forerunner/Fenix, with a handful buying Coros, Polar and Suunto. If you're a cyclist, you likely have a Garmin Edge or are part of the small group with the Wahoo Elemnt.

It's also a segment where touch screens aren't popular, and historically, Apple doesn't design products with more physical buttons than needed.

I don't even use 80% of its capable functions of this (gifted) sport watch but if you are into metrics on physical fitness and outdoor activities, this watch beats AppleWatch. The AppleWatch is a great option also, especially if it's mainly used for social, more everyday stuff. Winners either way and the Fenix 5 Sapphire is half the price it was 2-3 years ago.

This watch is too old, you could probably get a refurbished 6X for not a crazy amount more with a larger screen, more battery life, body battery, etc

Lowest deal I've searched & found that ranged from 500ish to 550..

hell I can't even justify giving up my Fenix 3 yet. lol

Would love to see a reasonably priced 6x refurb tho.

Wish I can trade in my vivoactive 3 and get some credit to get this!
I am using VA3 for more than 3 years and it still going strong.
Except few things, the battery life is crapped out and steps counting is way off.
So looking to upgrade to Fenix series.
But, Garmin never gives trade in.
So I went ahead and ordered Samsung watch 4 with VA3 trade in which I got $100 + $50 GC and for $120+ I got new Samsung.
I know it's very difficult for Garmin users to use fancy watches like apple and Samsung I have used both in past.
But, looking to see if the Samsung can give me decent functionalities like VA3 with good battery life.
Else, will give Samsung watch 4 to wife and get Fenix when it comes in deal.
