Some reviews say the sliders suck and that they break and don't close properly. Also say to get Hefty instead. Any truth to that?

yes, absolutely, the standard push to seal is MUCH more durable and reusable. to use these big bags only once for most food applications is so wasteful, they are big enough & heavy-guage enough to be practical to wash and reuse, but yeah, the zip slider version like these are garbage for reusable durability.

can't comment as to this vs Hefty brand.

I only buy freezer bags because they can be used for storage and freezer. Never have issue with Hefty slider bags.
