I read that it better to have 2 smaller air filter than 1 large one like these that cover 1500 sqft, make sense since you stuck one of these baby in 1 area might take a super long time to filter the farthest corner.
Check with your energy provider to see if they have $25 or $50 rebates for energy star air purifiers. Unfortunately my local provider dropped from $50 rebates to $25 this year.
FWIW, it is currently priced more than $100 under average price; ref: ccc

But, it's been on the market for almost 5 years, so it's probably getting replaced so app support may fall behind during the life of ownership if you purchased now.

I was looking at the Coway Airmega 400 for my living room/kitchen/dining room area but I decided to get two Coway Airmega 250 instead, so far so good.

Consumer Reports doesn't recommend the 300 model for this one. Says dust/pollen/smoke removal is only 2/5. Gonna pass. Pretty satisfied so far with my Blueair Pure 211+ even though it is in slightly a larger space than it's rated.

My only concern is that the charcoal filters are very expensive and should be changed twice a year. In three years you bought the machine again.

I have been picking up one of two air filters every posted slickdeal, a few different models. The deals I have like the best are the Winix C545 ($70 for 250CFM/400 SQFT) and the Winix 5500-2 ($100 for 250CFM/400 SQFT, but with active charcoal prefilter). These are great in that you can spread them out in large rooms, put in multiple rooms, etc. at a pretty low cost. As someone said earlier in the thread, buy multiples is better than one big one (and for the 545, you can get FIVE of them for the same price as one of these Cosway 400s, no brainer to go with the 545): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCCy72Nu79Q

I also like that the smaller ones are designed to go against walls, somewhat easier to place (I like to put them new A/C vents so they are near air currents).

I bought the 300 model (I see this one is the 400) 4 years ago for $440. It has been a good filter. I would recommend it.

Just FYI. The replacement filters go for around $80.

For those looking for a more entry level filter, a box fan with a 20x20x1 furnace filter slapped on the back is plenty for most people. On low setting, the air draw is enough to hold the filter in place. Simple as that, and I've had one running continuous for ~5 years now, plus 2 others I've added in another bedroom and near the litter box.

Since they're run continuous rather than cycled like a standard furnace, the filters will clog up quicker. Rather than the typical 90 days, they should be replaced monthly. Mine get changed when I remember, which is closer to every 3 months, but that's enough improvement in air quality for my needs. Need finer filtration, get a better quality furnace filter.

If that doesn't work for you, then this deal is a good option. Just seems like overkill for most people's needs, and a steep initial investment. Worst case you end up with a budget filter for a guest room, and buy this beast for your master.

It is undoubtedly better to have multiple smaller units unless you have one big open floor plan but also more inconvenient to clean them all constantly and change filters.

Personally I run a bunch on Winix refurb units because they are cheap and replacement filters are cheap. I prefer to run a bunch of them at a lower speed and they are basically silent.

To add to this, if you're OK with a higher initial cost, Lasko put out their new "Air Flex" which is a $60 fan but it includes a built-in filter holder so it looks a little nicer. It also comes with an initial MERV10 filter, so that's at least $10 in value.

is it worth the cost compared to others
Piling on with personal experience. I've owned this air purifier for a couple years. It does a great job at mitigating pet and cooking smells, and works well beyond the set filter change intervals. If you fart within its detection range, it will kick up the fan and out you.

I bought a few of the smaller ones recommended by Wirecutter, primarily because I didn't want to buy different size replacement filters. I have four, and the one that runs 24-7 is in my bedroom and my home office. I run the others primarily in the daytime and I use the timer.

BTW, for those complaining about the cost of the filter (you want it to work, don't you?), Coway sends you a 20% off code when you register your product.

Love farting under the covers and hearing the air purifier crank to full speed a second later. Never gets old.
