The Qnap has higher speed networking (2.5gbe vs 1.0gbe) making it more future proof and allowing faster data transfer. Qnap also has usb with 10gbps transfer speeds vs usb with 5gbps on the synology. Synology has the 1 extra hard drive bay. Looks like kinda a toss up to me.

Just bought it.... thumb'd up.
My 10 year old (almost) TQNAP TS-453 died.. no power coming in. The HDD are fine. I am just gonna get this and redo my RAID and setup a new NAS. hopefully this will last more than 10 years.

Is there any easier way to migrate to another qnap? Or have to copy everything, rebuild the raid and then copy back?

This seems crazy expensive compared to, say, the Asustor AS5304T at around $450.

I was really excited for this, but the AMD CPU isn't supported by Plex transcoding and I don't think development for it is a priority.

I think they're slightly different products. The Asustor seems like a pretty darn good deal, but it is missing the m2 slots for high speed SSD, no pci slot for expansion, 4gb less ram, and it also has slower USB ports. Asus says ~550MB/s transfer, Qnap up to ~800 (would require 10gb network card).

I currently have a qnap, but I'll have to keep an eye on the Asustor line in the future. Also need to check out their OS see what that is like.

While the m2 slots are a nice to have, they are of little use to most users, especially in a home environment. There is an empty dimm slot in the Asus that can take another 4GB ($20 from ebay) or 2 x 8GB if you like. The Ryzen in the Qnap looks to be about 35% faster [cpubenchmark.net] than the Celeron in the Asustor but not everyone will use the extra power. As for the OS - it's comparable and has just about everything that Qnap offers including a large selection of 3rd party apps.

The key thing here is that the Asustor has been out for over 2 years and $450 is its regular price. Along comes Qnap now with a similar product and asking $660 after discounts. You can decide how much the extra hardware in the Qnap is worth to you but as a home user I personally wouldn't pay a $200 premium for it. Even if I wanted the extras, this price is not a hot deal. And a pre-discount price of $780 is simply ludicrous.

QNAP should be avoided at all costs. Seems like there is a new huge new malware exploit every 3 days and they don't even tell their customers about it unless somebody else whilstleblows it. I've had a 5 bay unit turned off for the last year because I couldn't trust it anymore.

CPUs in NAS
The CPUs used in most home or small-business NAS are not particularly powerful. Only some NAS will be capable of good performance when transcoding 720p type content. Very few NAS will be able to do so for 1080p type content.

Also bare in mind that your NAS is normally the guardian of your data. To load it up with apps that suck up a lot of resources puts your data at risk of loss or corruption.
