It's worth noting that support for hardware-based authentication is considered a premium feature for many services; for example, if you use the password managers LastPass, Dashlane, or Bitwarden, you must upgrade to a Business, Premium, or Enterprise plan to enable a security key as a second factor.

Its like putting a strong lock on your door. Will it be more inconvenient than leaving your door unlocked? Yes, but thieves will tend to go for the unlocked digital accounts. Not everything needs to be protected in this way.

Would recommend it for things that would really screw you over if someone were to take over like your main google/apple account, your password manager, or crypto accounts.

I use these for work and I honestly recommend the Nano series because you can keep the keys plugged in. On the first year of the job, I hung my security key on my badge or kept it on my keyring. Later, it's more convenient to keep the keys on the actual computer.

It's primarily a form-factor issue. If you're using a laptop, you don't want to constantly fumble around and insert the USB all the time. The nubby ones can slip into your laptop case without being unplugged. It's kind of like those Logitech micro receivers that come with mouses. You should be fine keeping the key plugged in on desktops though, but it's unsightly and may break off if you're not careful.

I love the idea of these, and really want to use them, but the problem is where I can actually use them. The places I want to, like banks and such, don't. Then out of the few places that do allow them, quite a number of which you can still bypass 2FA because of dumb customer service policies.

I'm curious to know what people's workflows look like when using these. If you're constantly logging in and out of various accounts that require 2FA it seems like that would cause a lot of wear/tear on your USB port so do you just leave your key plugged in?

And if you follow the advice to have multiple keys...say one at your computer, one on your keychain and one in a safe deposit box somewhere...how do you keep them in sync? Are there apps that will periodically sync keys or do you have to manually register each key with each service?

Went with the 2 USB C package. Any other choice seems to be going backward in time. We have one laptop that doesn't have a C port but easy to get a USB A to C converter. Phones, Chromebook, another laptop, & desktop all have USB C ports.
