I'm going to go for Shishedo and Lancome. Estee Lauder is good. I'm pretty much buying everything except Mario Baduscu on September 8. I'm really interesting in the Origins clay mask but I don't think I'll buy it as Origins seems to be too heavily scented for me.

It depends on your skin. I have sensitive skin so I tend to stay with anything that isn't too perfumed. I'm looking at the vitamin c serum, I've heard a lot about it but I need to research more on it.
Since you're new to this, I'd stick with the more popular ones as (at least to me) they work. I don't know about the newer brands and I can't really "test" on my skin cause I break out. So anything like Estee Lauder, Clinique, Lancome. Philosphy is OK, I find them too perfumed so I normally stay away from it.
As for makeup, I just started so I barely know my colors.

Sunday Riley products (Sept 7) are almost always an instant buy for me - everything I've tried is great. The rest of the brands - Lancome, Origins, Clinique, etc -all "shopping mall" brands, seem adequateish, if you're new to beauty. At 42, I've gone through all those lines and usually pass on most of them.
Shiseido is always a good bet - won't let you down, but there are better options if you want to really get into it. I'd recommend that brand for any newbie and any gender. As a side note, Shiseido's facial pads (like cotton pads that you use to apply toner, take off nail polish etc) are the GOAT, and it's a silly expense, but I can never go back to any other type.
Holy Grail products for me on this list:
Lancome Bi-Facil double action makeup remover (you can go through 20 different brands of remover and none will come close to this one) (Sept 2)
Too Faced Lip Injection (Sept 9)
Clinique All About Eyes (regular and rich - these are my two clinique exceptions, and I've never found better eye creams, anywhere. I know everyone says you don't need an eye cream, I say you do you, boo) (sept 17)

I use eye cream but I tried Clinique and Lancome but I really like Lancome Genefique. Clinique didn't seem like it did much. I only started using it a couple years ago. Didn't know you needed it! It's what age does to you! You realize what you should've done when you were in yoour 20's and didn't have money!
But I do like the Clinique face moisturizers. I bought so many earlier this year and last year with the 21 days of beauty. Still want to try Shiseido and the Lancome ones. I tried one Shiseido but my face broke out.

vitamin c and hyaluronic acid in the morning, lock those in while still damp with a good moisturizer with spf. retinol before bed, also moisturizing after. products by "the ordinary" are quality and reasonably priced.

You do not need a separate eye cream/serum. More expensive compared to face cream/serum, although they do tend to be less fragranced. I HIGHLY recommend using all unfragranced products. I believe The Ordinary is unfragranced. as is The Inkey List (available at another retailer), and similarly inexpensive.
Seems like a BB cream might be handy for a guy, you get a sort of foundation effect that way, and I'd look for one with spf in it.
