I'm in the market for an electric scooter for under $500. I'd like to learn first before buying some of the more expensive ones. Is this good for beginners or is there something better in the $500 range.

12 mph max speed is horrible prob means even slower than that depending on your weight.

Read, watch, research. Although Segway/Ninebot tends to be of higher quality - and the G30 Max is revered as a very good scooter by enthusiasts and amateurs - their cheaper models can be slow, short range, and don't offer a mechanical brake. This being Slickdeals, you obviously already know to watch for great deals. The recent $250 GoTrax XR Elite deals were much better IMO - scooter performance and price/value. The $250 Hover 1 Blackhawk @$250 was also a great first scooter (same as TurboAnt X7 Pro). GoTrax XR Ultras at $200-$250 also a great deal. And of course the G30 Max @ $550 when it comes around again.

I wouldn't buy anything hover-1. My son's had a handlebar break off. The metal was super thin, the thread nonstandard, replacements unavailable, and support nonexistent. 2 other hover-1s in the neighborhood (3 different models total) have had issues and similar experience. Maybe the other brands suck too in this regard, but hover 1 sucks.

I've had no issues with mine. 18mph, 15mi range, $250. Awesome deal.

That's my point. It may work fine, but once you have a problem you're F-ed.

Spending $400 on a scooter that only goes 12 mph is a bad idea. Many better options available.

I totally understand. Luck of the draw. Note I also have a couple GoTrax XR Elite's. Had an issue with one out-of-the-box. Email support was generally responsive and I had a new controller in a week. Meanwhile people are screaming in the FB group about how horrible support is.

I would recommend go for Ninebot Max if you get a deal I got last year for 600, but its worth it. Way fast like 30 mph and range is 40-45 miles. It's a solid scooter

Agree, hover1 is the worst in terms of support. Had one that worked perfectly and needed no service, second one started randomly shutting off in the middle of a ride. Their email support is a black hole, couldn't get any sensible replies from them at all. Every single support message was just an infinite loop of "…have you tried charging battery? Please charge battery and reply back."

Basically buying hover 1 means a chance of buying a $500 paperweight.
