I owned the E22 for several months, so I can provide some first-hand information about this scooter.

Pros
  • Good build quality. Ninebot makes some solidly built scooters, and this is no exception.
  • Several flaws with the ESx series (stem wobble, handlebar wobble, awful suspension, solid tires, control board issues) have been fixed.
  • The big 9-inch foam tires are puncture-immune and never need inflating, while having better traction and ride comfort than solid rubber tires. An excellent middle ground between pneumatic and solid tires. They are legitimately great.
  • Stable ride makes it good for beginners.
  • Reasonably light, at 29 lbs.
  • Basically zero maintenance required.
Cons
  • Slow 13mph top speed out of the box, but you can easily firmware unlock it to go ~16mph, about the same as a rental scooter.
  • Limited range. Around 8-10 miles per charge.
  • Not actually all that small, even when folded. If you're looking for an ultraportable that you can carry with you in the back of an Uber, this is not the scooter for you. (Get a Uscooters/Etwow model if that's what you want.)
With the firmware unlock, it has similar specs to the GoTrax XR, with better warranty and customer support. It's no Ninebot MAX, but it's perfectly suited for a beginner. I ended up selling mine because I wanted more range, but that's what beginner scooters do--they help you figure out what your needs are.

I bought 2 of the Hiboy S2 Pro for $485 at Amazon.com about 2 months ago (no longer sells at Amazon). Great scooters for the price..

Range is 25 miles (did not test)
Top speed is 19mph (yes, it does)
Battery charge time is 4-6 hours (did not test)
10-inch solid tires (slightly smaller than 10)
Double brakes (hand and trigger)
Weighs about 36 lbs
IP54 water splash resistant
Max load is 260 (Can carry 2 people within max limit)
Has rear dual shocks
Has front light, taillight and sidelight (not that bright)
Folds easily and easy to carry
Can upgrade and buy a seat for $90
Has bluetooth lock
Has cruise control (not that useful)
Downhill/braking battery regeneration

12 mph max speed is horrible prob means even slower than that depending on your weight.
12mph is equivalent to running a 5 minute mile. That's nothing to scoff at. Why would you want to go more than 10 miles on a scooter anyway? In other words, even if you could go 20 mph, you would need to be on the scooter 30 mins to go 10 miles at 20mph. who would do that? at that point either get an ebike or a vespa, or a cheap ev like a nissan leaf.

Agree, hover1 is the worst in terms of support. Had one that worked perfectly and needed no service, second one started randomly shutting off in the middle of a ride. Their email support is a black hole, couldn't get any sensible replies from them at all. Every single support message was just an infinite loop of "…have you tried charging battery? Please charge battery and reply back."

Basically buying hover 1 means a chance of buying a $500 paperweight.
I agree @ $500. IMO most "normal" priced entry-level scooters at this price point have a high propensity for unhappiness. Or people spend $300-$400 and then find out range is really 8miles. But @ $250 a Hover 1 Blackhawk is a good deal for the motor and battery size, especially via a seller (Walmart) with an easy return policy. I'd never go to Hover (or GoTrax, or TurboAnt, etc.) and pay msrp or their "special" discount. But at $200-$250 the risk is lower.

I'm relatively new to scooters, and I'm not a speed freak at all. But I wouldn't recommend anything rated below the standard 15.5mph. This just means it will be that much worse on any little incline and range will further suffer. My super cautious and non-athletic spouse would complain about 10-12mph.

Reviews from Target indicate that they hold or do better then their spec:

"I bought 2 scooters, one for my 14 year old daughter and another for my 16 year old son after renting scooters a few times in downtown Chicago last summer. My son and daughter assembled and downloaded the app to their phones in less than an hour and said they were easy to put together. I've tried them both and I am really impressed with them as they are very similar to the ones we rented but they are lighter and easy to fold up and take in the car. They also keep a pretty steady speed even going up the small hills in our neighborhood. As far as control I found it easy to slow down and brake even when going at higher speeds. they go pretty fast as well-about 17-20 mph which I believe is faster than advertised. My kids and I (and their friends) have had a lot of fun using these! I highly recommend this brand and model for adults and teens. And from what I researched, this make and model offers the best quality in this price range!"

12 mph question:
I'm looking for a scooter for my kid (freshman in HS) so he can ride it to school (about 4 miles round trip) when the weather is nice because his bus picks him up an hour before the school starts to go 4 miles. Wouldn't I want the scooter to be slow so he doesn't get terribly hurt?

I've been interested in a scooter for .5 mile commutes daily. Are there any that are actually lightweight? It seems like the trend is towards heavy duty scooters, but Id prefer something slower with less battery in exchange for a 15-20 pound weight

I would recommend go for Ninebot Max if you get a deal I got last year for 600, but its worth it. Way fast like 30 mph and range is 40-45 miles. It's a solid scooter
The Ninebot Max can't go anywhere near 30 mph. It can go 30 kph, which is around 19 mph.

Edit:

Real-world tested range is around 30 miles rather than 40-45.

Not to say that the Ninebot Max isn't a great scooter, but just trying to be realistic Smilie

Check out electric-scooter dot guide for a thorough review, and if you can find it at $600 jump on it for sure.

I suggest you look into the Ninebot Air T15 scooter.
