Pros
- Good build quality. Ninebot makes some solidly built scooters, and this is no exception.
- Several flaws with the ESx series (stem wobble, handlebar wobble, awful suspension, solid tires, control board issues) have been fixed.
- The big 9-inch foam tires are puncture-immune and never need inflating, while having better traction and ride comfort than solid rubber tires. An excellent middle ground between pneumatic and solid tires. They are legitimately great.
- Stable ride makes it good for beginners.
- Reasonably light, at 29 lbs.
- Basically zero maintenance required.
Cons- Slow 13mph top speed out of the box, but you can easily firmware unlock it to go ~16mph, about the same as a rental scooter.
- Limited range. Around 8-10 miles per charge.
- Not actually all that small, even when folded. If you're looking for an ultraportable that you can carry with you in the back of an Uber, this is not the scooter for you. (Get a Uscooters/Etwow model if that's what you want.)
With the firmware unlock, it has similar specs to the GoTrax XR, with better warranty and customer support. It's no Ninebot MAX, but it's perfectly suited for a beginner. I ended up selling mine because I wanted more range, but that's what beginner scooters do--they help you figure out what your needs are. Some additional reading material: Electric Scooter Guide review [electric-scooter.guide] and comparison with Ninebot ES2 [youtube.com]

2 slow, 2 hilarious!!
Basically buying hover 1 means a chance of buying a $500 paperweight.

"I bought 2 scooters, one for my 14 year old daughter and another for my 16 year old son after renting scooters a few times in downtown Chicago last summer. My son and daughter assembled and downloaded the app to their phones in less than an hour and said they were easy to put together. I've tried them both and I am really impressed with them as they are very similar to the ones we rented but they are lighter and easy to fold up and take in the car. They also keep a pretty steady speed even going up the small hills in our neighborhood. As far as control I found it easy to slow down and brake even when going at higher speeds. they go pretty fast as well-about 17-20 mph which I believe is faster than advertised. My kids and I (and their friends) have had a lot of fun using these! I highly recommend this brand and model for adults and teens. And from what I researched, this make and model offers the best quality in this price range!"
I'm looking for a scooter for my kid (freshman in HS) so he can ride it to school (about 4 miles round trip) when the weather is nice because his bus picks him up an hour before the school starts to go 4 miles. Wouldn't I want the scooter to be slow so he doesn't get terribly hurt?
Edit:
Real-world tested range is around 30 miles rather than 40-45.
Not to say that the Ninebot Max isn't a great scooter, but just trying to be realistic
Check out electric-scooter dot guide for a thorough review, and if you can find it at $600 jump on it for sure.
