Review with the 4k screen here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/202...197.0.html Battery life with 4k screen is god awful and frankly unacceptable -- 4.5hrs of WIFI browsing. Not sure how much better battery life is with the default screen.

Here we go with another "don't buy a laptop for emails and web browsing because it doesn't get too bright". Guess where else it isn't too bright? Inside my house at night time when I am most likely home with a laptop 🤷

If you want to watch movies on a laptop display outside in direct sun, more power to you. Personally I wouldn't use a laptop in direct sun for any reason... given the whole heat is bad for components thing. Even a plastic chassis will heat up if left on a table in direct sun for long enough.

This is why they do 250 nits. Battery.

To an extent, but notebook check and other sites normalize the battery life tests by choosing 150 or 200nits for testing. NBC is 150 nits I believe so the awful battery life is not a consequence of the screen's max brightness but poor optimization of components and software by HP.

beware.. the fan noise in HP is unbearable most of the time..

i bought HP ENVY BA1097 model. if i keep in "performance" mode in HP settings, fan never stops and lot of noise.

i think HP Pavilion models do not even have Thermal control.. so please check before you buy.

also keyboard is also flap. white/silver keys - unable to operate at nights.

In description it claims backlit keyboard.

For black keyboard panel, backlit keyboard really helps at dark. for silve/white keyboard panel, the same backlit keyboard worsen the situation...keys are already white, and light also white, so you can not see the keys clearly unless you keep at one position on your lap. this issue only at Dark (no light around)

if possible, i strongly encourage to stay away from this silver keyboard panel.

as i already bought, i bought an external keyboard/mouse and using it all times.

YMMV but I have a $50 off $250 Amex offer. But I avoid buying direct from HP due to their horrible return policy (15% restocking fee).

Not true. They use 250-nit panels to cut cost. The post you quoted noted the poor battery life with 4K screen, but that's mainly due to the very high resolution. There are plenty of bright (400 nit) FHD displays that use no more battery life than a 250-nit panel, some are "low-power" panels that actually get better battery life than cheaper 250-nit panels. But they cost more.
