Currently using a dash popcorn maker which doesn't quite do smaller kernals, just shoots them out and lucky if half of them pop. But it's a healthy alternative and cheaper than microwave popcorn bags

Enjoy fresh popcorn while you watch your favorite Star Wars film. Create your own unique flavors and blends, like caramel corn with nuts or a spicy popcorn snack mix."

There are two basic types of popping chambers. One type blows hot air straight up from the bottom of the chamber, the idea is that the force is not enough force out an unpopped kernel, but just enough to keep them agitating until they pop. There is a second type what has small vents along the sides of the chamber near the bottom. Hot air is forced in laterally, moving kernels in a circular path until they pop. The second type is the one you want to avoid the issue you describe. Unfortunately, the type of popping chamber design isn't usually part of the selling description.

I know all of this because I bought the second type actually for roasting coffee beans. The first type wouldn't work at all for that. If you search for using a popper to roast coffee, web pages on the subject specify some models with this type of chamber.

Hot air popcorn makers cost about 10 bucks back when they first came out in the 1970's. They sucked then. They suck now.
Hey now, I love popcorn that tastes like cardboard... these things rock!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. For me it's less taste than texture. I prefer the oil in a pot method but my wife insists on air popping and actually likes it better so it's a minor point of contention. Once the butter and parm go on though, It's not as big a deal and air popping is less messy.

Suck how? They pop without oil and you don't have to constantly watch them for fear of burning.

Any other method tastes better than the garbage that comes out of these. Ease of use is high - taste (and texture for you) are very low. I've switched to throwing some kernals in a brown paper bag and microwaving them - turns out much better than these machines.

Do you have any specific model you tried and would recommend?

What comes out tastes like inedible crap. Unless you're popping popcorn to feed the birds or squirrels, why buy a machine that makes garbage you don't want to eat?
