I have 3 of these and 6 sensors in our offices (5000sqft). They work great. They do a good job dealing with smart home/away so I can keep the temps sensible when people aren't in the office or when they work late. The data you can monitor works well too.
I have 2x nest lite at home. These Ecobees will replace the nest lites. They are very sexy, but they have the worst user interface for setting schedules. I am completely spoiled by ecobee. It takes forever to set temperatures for various days and for vacations and etc. Ecobee makes it soo easy.
The main thing I hate most about nest is they only let you see 10 days of historical data. It's worthless. How can you possible monitor usage if you can't compare to previous months or years. Is your HVAC clogged? low on freon? going bad? You can't tell because you can't compare to last year.
I'm a huge fan of ecobee and a real nest hater these days. I am very excited to replace them.
Anyone want to buy a pair of lightly used and emotionally abused Nest lite thermostats LOL!

Glad to see an honest review here. When we bought our place, previous owner had these but was quick to realize that the upstairs hvac were using the old Honeywell one. Hoping to utilize zoning, and hopefully get a good deal with the smart sensors.
You are supposed to pay sales tax in every state whether they collect it or not. More and more businesses are courteously (and being compelled) to collect the sales tax (or use tax) on your behalf since people generally don't pay tax as they are supposed to.
I like the look of the Ecobees. We have 2 thermostats in the house so we need to buy 2. The weather here in the Bay Area for the most part is constant, and the AC is pretty much always off. Not sure if we need it that much, but it be nice to complete a smart home.

Do refurbs qualify for rebate from energy companies?
that's really going to depend on your energy company. However, since you will have a receipt from the original manufacturer, I doubt there is a place on the forms or in the review that checks for whether the product is refurbished or not.
I had the original Ecobee 3 at our condo and included it when we sold... regretting that I did that. We just closed on a new place and I'm going to need to install a new thermostat. I *really* loved and miss the functionality of these. Never used a Nest but got really used to Ecobee and thought it was very easy to use and control. It would be nice if the electric company here had rebates but their rebate program is whack.
I have one (the package deal from Costco with a temperature sensor and door and window sensors) and I love it! No learning crap - I set it according to a schedule, or if we're leaving for a few days set it to cool down remotely when we're on our way back. My favorite feature is simply being able to control it from anywhere in the house without walking to the thermostat - silly I know.
The only issue I have with the ecobee3 lite is that it often loses its connection to my Apple Home. Shows as 'No Response' in the Home app on iPhone, iPad or Mac. Still works through the ecobee app, but I've set geolocation automations for leaving and returning home through Apple Home, and they don't always work which is annoying.
