My quarter petabyte will still be chugging toward breakeven when I die and my wife loses the wallet key.

However, if you look at the statistical data from backblaze, seagaate is just as reliable overall as any other brand and each brand has models here and there that are better or worse.

Get 12T or higher to get non SMR seagate external usb
I've owned 5 WD Externals and 10 Seagate Externals.
I've had 2 of the WD External drives fail and none of my Seagate have. It's not an issue with age either, some of my Seagate drives are 8+ years old. And all these drives have just been for data storage only, not constant read/write.
My server (single X5670) groans at trying to transcode 4K HDR content, but CPU usage is in the low single digit range when I play a 4K movie on my Shield.
