Can you imagine losing 8TB of data because you were cheap enough to get Seagate and not just that but Seagate SMR.

I cannot. That's what backups and RAID are for. You shouldn't trust any hard drive.

One of the drives in my server is an 8TB Seagate SMR. Big, sustained writes to it are slow, but reads are fine and on par with my other 5400 RPM drives. It's been fine for 3 years, 151 days so far. My most recent drive failure was actually an 8TB WD red that was less than 3 years old. No data loss on that one either. Applause

I don't think this would be a great drive as a backup target though, especially if you're backing up an entire system. The sustained writes would cripple it. If you're just tossing movies and TV shows on it though, it's fine.

Funny to hear that since my experience has been nearly the opposite.

I've owned 5 WD Externals and 10 Seagate Externals.

I've had 2 of the WD External drives fail and none of my Seagate have. It's not an issue with age either, some of my Seagate drives are 8+ years old. And all these drives have just been for data storage only, not constant read/write.
0"data storage only, not constant read/write" --that is not exactly a good test situation. Write to the drive, shove it in a drawer. In the last decade, every seagate of mine has crashed hard. WD all the way for me. I thrash my drives reading and writing. Seagates can't hang. Anecdotal? Well, the community consensus hints otherwise. There is something fundamentaly wrong with seagate design, and has been for a while.

But, I see it, some will experience the exact opposite. But, most know seagates are trash.

There was a time about a decade ago when their 3TB expansion drive was known to have issues, however, those days are long gone. Backblaze publishes their hard drive tests every quarter with huge sample sizes that no consumer on this forum can replicate. Their data shows no statistical significance of Seagate drives failing at a higher rate than their counterparts. I'll trust their data more than anything anecdotal people post about here.

Yes, I got the shipment delay email also. Some retailers use 30-days as their own internal threshold for choosing to cancel vs delay orders. I am hoping that is why they used the 30-day number and not because they expect it to take that long.

0Ive been to their site. Read the data. It is useful, especially weeding out high failure rate drives.

However, its a different usage scenario. Everything in that environment is completely different than my home environment. Especially drives being banged around while in use. I doubt servers get knocked over a lot, or picked up and dropped like a laptop.

I don't know why seagates often fail with me. But, i figure they are not as hardy as WD in a "chaotic" environment. I have some drives that have been taken in and out of many different computers. Carried all over the place, handled a lot and tossed in boxes between use. I still have 160GB hard drives. Almost all WD. The Seagates bit the dust long ago.

Its a mystery to me, but going WD fixed my sad "failing drives" era of my life.
