keep in mind that when running on propane, you aren't getting the full 2kw peak. That rating is using gas. propane produces 10-15% less. Not a deal breaker for most, just something to know before going into if you are planning to max it out.

I've used a Duromax XP2000EH for three years now. I have over 400 hours on it. I've used I through three major hurricanes now in Louisiana for 5+ days straight during each.

On propane, I can run a normal refrigerator/freezer and a 5k BTU window unit. With various other electronics. Normally get around 12h on a 20lb tank.

Note the Amazon model includes the 12v adaptor, and the Walmart model swaps it for the set of USB charging ports.

The Sportsman 4000 W peak generators go on sale for $250. I used one of those for a week when the power was out. It's dual fuel, and with a cheap aftermarket carb can be tri-fuel (can connect to natural gas). It's noisy and inefficient, but I ran half of the circuits in my house by wiring directly into the breaker panel, and I also ran an extension cord to my neighbor and powered some of his appliances.

For household backup though, I'd probably go with a 240v inverting generator so that all circuits can be powered by wiring into the breaker panel. Inverting is quieter and more fuel efficient.

Natural gas is nice too since there's no messing with gas cans or propane bottles. When our power was out, the wait at the 2 gas stations that were open was a couple hours. Natural gas would allow one to skip those lines.

Running in a garage even with the doors open is a bad idea. They are made to be outside. An improvised rain shelter like a patio umbrella wouldn't be the worst idea but it's unnecessary. Just make sure your extension cords are in good condition.
It's fine if you have it near the opening and point the exhaust out.

I think if portability is not of a big concern, then this genny is still a better bang for your buck: https://www.amazon.com/Champion-P...B083V8VNGL. As they say, buy once, cry once.

Sorry I keep posting. But for a $150 more is this worth it?

If you need more power, that 3150W running (propane) Champion inverter generator you linked to is a lot of bang for the buck. It is inverter based so you can put it on ECO mode and it will idle down at lighter loads to be quiet, but since it is open frame it won't be as quiet as the enclosed generators. It is also 90lb. I went with two inverter generators similar to the one on this thread. I can put them in parallel for 3400W (propane) or when I don't need as much power I can just run one and save fuel. One is 40lb and the other is 50lb so they are easy to move around individually. Since there are two, no single failure is going to take out my complete backup power setup. The main downside is the cost. $888 for two of these (the one for this thread) VS $615 for the one you linked to. For running your fridge, some lights, and a TV, the Champion in this thread is hard to beat.

Which one is better - this or Wen 57225i? I don't care about the dual fuel.
Do you mean the WEN 56235i? I'd probably go with that because it has a fuel shut off valve and higher wattage, assuming you intend to use gas vs propane. That being said, it's hard to make a recommendation for you without understanding specific needs. P.S.) I have seen the WEN for $385 before..

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. Picked one up based off of this... Down the line, i'll get another one and link as you outlined.

Thanks, i think for emergencies to run a fridge and my pellet grill it will be pretty solid.

fyi

The average home refrigerator uses 350-780 watts. starting watts can go up 12 or 1500 watts .
so you need a min of hmmmm 2000 watt generator just for fridge

I just spent over an hour trying to find out how to power this with NG. I had to wade through tons of links that told how to convert gas to propane or gas to NG but just confusion about a dual fuel to NG.

Except one youtuber that said just put NG into the propane port.

That seems a bit sketchy to me.

Any comments/advice?

Sounds like you should be looking at the tri-fuel models that can run on natural gas, gasoline, or propane. OP's deal is a dual-fuel model (gasoline or propane). Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

OP here. Already got the unit of my purchase from yesterday. I am running it on propane to break-in the engine as I type this. I didn't bother putting any gasoline in since I have another 8 year old 2kw A-iPower one from Costco that is gasoline only. This one is a backup to it and also to give me the flexibility to use an alternative fuel source (got plenty of the 20lb propane tank for BBQ, outdoor heaters, etc.)

The first time starting took couple more pull than I liked but it started without problem. I think the key here is to make sure you gently pull 3 to 5 times with choke to purge the line of air and fill it with propane. Once that is done, turn the dial to "propane" and give it a couple of good pulls. Mine started on the 3rd or 4th pull but worked fine after that. I have re-tried disconnecting the propane line and re-set everything and it started at the 1st or 2nd pull on the next try. No problem once I got the hang of it.

Compared to the A-iPower from Costco (which has an official Yamaha engine), this is slightly quieter. As the wife says, "quiet generator is an oxymoron" so your perception is YMMV. That said, I don't think Champion is lying about the noise level at 53 decibel (probably measured at the industry "standard" of 23 feet way). It is day-n-night difference when compared to my neighbors 8kw open-frame monster. That one will attract all the zombies to the neighborhood.

Obviously can't give any long term review. However, I am more than happy with the purchase so far. Couple link to 3rd party reviews below:

3rd party review. [youtube.com]
Another review [youtube.com] of similar 2500 Watt Dual Fuel unit.
It's highly recommended to start breaking-in of dual powered generator with gasoline only and only after that run it on propane.

I would do something more permanent and do a though the wall installation. They sell kits for this, that way there is no need to have a window open with a cord running though it. I personally would build my own kit as this seems expensive to me, but its an all in one solution.

Thanks for this idea. It's a good balance between cords running from the outside and a professionally installed transfer switch. It's a good idea.

That would take all the fun out of it and probability get me expelled from the ranks of the slickdealers.
