The chances are that the virus will get to you before it gets to the filter. Live alone - that's the solution.

Your comment is irrelevant if someone can only use the 1 inch filters

Home D has Arm & Hammer 1200MPR filters for their special buy today. 12 packs for $70 ($6 each after tax). Bought some 20x20's myself.

Make sure your furnace is OK with 12 Merv. Higher filtration means more pressure on your blower motor and could lead to premature failure.

Also note that the lifetime of these 1" filters is rated at around 4-6 weeks. If you go for a 4" filter, they are usually rated for 6 months. I got a pair of 20x16x4 Filtrete filters [amazon.com] from Amazon Warehouse "like new" recently for $15. The 4" filters also have a much larger surface area so the associated static pressure is lower.

And if in doubt, remember the old axiom... if the angle of your dangle equals the sag of your bag then the throb on your knob is constant. Write that down in your notebooks, kids.
Stop feeding users bad info. Higher MERV rated filters have more pleats=more surface area=same air flow. It will have zero effect on your AC system.

I partially agree. While that's true, the concentration of the virus particles are still lower when you use a HVAC system with a filter rated MERV 13 and above or when an HEPA air purifier is running. Remember, everything is about the viral load. You won't necessary catch the virus when a single virus particle reaches your nostrils, it needs to reach a certain concentration to be infective. Of course, living alone is the best solution but it's not always plausible.

Those are very flimsy filters. Lots of complaints from users.

I think it is you who has been eating bad info. It's not a given that higher MERV filters will have more pleats. And you understand that the filters are for both heating and cooling, right? Tsk! :shakehead:

Anyone know if these restrict airflow too much? I tend to go with a medium grade filter because I'm not sure these things block too much of the air flow? My wife always want to get the highest one.

This exact one has 3x the surface area compared to a lower rate filter and you're still trying to stand by your bad info? Lmao. Go educate yourself: https://youtu.be/RkjRKIRva58

How are the frames on these?

The Arm & Hammer ones I've been using from Home Depot sales always seem to bend upward and buckle from the airflow. Due to having cheap/flimsy frames.

How did "used-like new" show up?

Well, not to his defense or anything, but different companies have different setups for the filters, and each brand has varying airflow, even between the same MERV ratings.

Project Farm on youtube did a pretty cool video on this.

You are mistaken, more filtration by nature is more restrictive.

More filtration is more restrictive so manufacturers counteract this by adding MORE SURFACE AREA into the filter pack. There is 3x more filter material folded into this pack compared to a lesser rated, same sized filter. Please educate yourself: https://youtu.be/RkjRKIRva58

First of all, kudos for quoting Project Farm - I love that guy, and I have watched that video previously.

Let's just say that there are some high MERV filters out there that have increased static pressure beyond the specified maximum for some blowers. Essentially, I wouldn't advise anyone to assume they can safely use any filter in their system, particularly a high MERV one, without checking the specifications of both the filter and their blower. Now I'm starting to sound like a lawyer.

The problem is with your statement "so manufacturers counteract this by adding MORE SURFACE AREA". While this may be true in some cases there are no guarantees that manufacturers will do this. Many will want to quote a high MERV value, charge a premium for it, and skimp on the amount of material they use because they don't care if your blower motor burns out 6 months from now.
