this is one of my favorite games, and that is a very good price, great theme for halloween!
Downsides - the second half of the game (after the haunt starts) sometimes isn't fair (its either too easy for the survivors to beat the traitor, or too hard, and you'll know it as soon as it starts). I've read that the scenarios aren't proofread very well (some are unclear, or some the rules aren't written as intended), but i've never come across one that made me complain. If you want a romp through a haunted mansion, this is the game!

Not quite. think of those movies where a bunch of random people are invited to a mansion, and find out they can win 1million dollars if they can spend the whole night there.
you each play a character (a dr. a jock, a little girl, etc) and you explore a randomly generated mansion (by flipping room tiles over) and collect items/weapons and clues. Every time you collect an "omen" you roll a bunch of special dice to see if the haunt starts.

if you roll less non-blanks than you have collected omens, then you start a "haunt" where one of the players becomes a traitor and it becomes a 1vs many game. The traitor could be a werewolf, or an axe murderer, or under alien mind control. There is a whole booklet of different haunt scenarios, randomized by omen/room/player character combination.
The different scenarios do not string together into a campaign.

Do consider grabbing this via Target. Though you're not likely to run into a real problem, since this seems like a legitimate sale, I still recall when Amazon via woot! allowed a third party seller to push a counterfeit board game (since I doubt that Amazon got duped, but accept that Amazon fronts a lot of third party sellers). Of course, the situation with Amazon's third party sellers can be TRULY awful (with the exception being those third party sellers who are actual game publishers).

If given an option, I personally avoid Amazon for board games going forward and would recommend the same to anyone else.

Good luck!
Jon

Great game, and now there's expansions if you somehow run out of haunts you haven't done!

Owned this game for 2 years, but never got people interested enough to play it. Maybe I'll try this Halloween

Fun game but the balance can ruin it. I prefer betrayal at baulders gate, same game but more interesting setting and slightly better balance.

BG sure has better balance and much clearer rules than the OG game (in most haunts at least), but I much prefer the OG theme/setting and some of the OG haunts are really fun.

Hard to say which I'd suggest at the same price, but for $25 picking up this game is a no-brainer!

I get the feeling the box will probably come with some creases or dents.

I bought this several years ago and we've only played it two or three times. The scenarios are extremely one-sided. Either the heroes will win extremely easily or the traitor will win extremely easily. There really isn't a whole lot of middle ground. We would spend like 30 minutes during the planning phase that occurs after the traitor is discovered only to have our plans completely decimated because the scenario was so imbalanced. Both sides just ended up frustrated and didn't have fun. I do not recommend it.

Not bad for the price. The game does have a bit of a learning cure though.

My only issue is that despite the scenarios, it felt repetitive for me. I enjoyed dead of winter and Eldritch horror a lot more. Granted, when I played Eldritch horror, we had the expansion pack as well.
