Fwiw, having gone in with appropriate (in my opinion) expectations, I've never had a bad experience with them. Yeah the seats and trays are small and they nickel and dime you for everything, but that was pretty much to be expected.
I only use them for short trips and non-urgent flights and I have a bag sized to their personal item allowance so I never pay extra or have to worry much about delays (which happen with any airline). If a trip is important then I'm going to pay more than $30 for it, which is how much I've paid for some of those flights.

In other words, to me this feels too much like a Groupon that might never get used for full value. I've been through too many of those.
In the past when I've priced them out, most of their destinations (from where I'm at) are not daily flights.
If my flight is canceled or delayed I miss out on a day of vacation, or worse, a hotel night I cannot cancel on top of that.
I can't risk a 'whatevs' approach if I'm flying to see a game or concert, which is the impression I've got about them and Spirit.
The nickel and diming isn't the issue. If it works for someone, great!

I've priced Frontier for direct flights from Ct to FL. And they are cheaper, BUT by the time you add back in things that most people would want anyway, especially if traveling with others or kids, these discount places (Frontier, Spirit) are just as if not more expensive than standard carriers.
If you're a seat-of-the-pants last minute bring nothing kind of person, I can see the attraction though.
google ~ frontier buy tickets at airport ~ to see how to avoid an added fee for buying online. I ride our regional bus out to the airport (free these days) to buy at the counter and save $21 per ticket.
