20x20x1 is the perfect size to strap to the back of a box fan for a DIY air filter. Extremely effective.
That point is definitely brought up in every filter thread, but I wouldn't use the word supposedly. The higher MERV filters ARE more restrictive, which is the point. They filter more/smaller particles out. If your system can handle it and you want the higher filtration then go for it, otherwise don't.
You get much worse heating efficiency with a restrictive filter, and it' doesn't clean the air NEARLY as well as a dedicated hepa unit in the room where you are.

You can get the best of both worlds by doing it separately. Lower utility bill + better filtration.

Not all filters are created equal. The rating has nothing to do with the air pressure drop ( i could be wrong). A the cheap merv 8 filter could have the higher air pressure drop than an more expensive one with higher merv rating.

i can show you higher merv filters in the same manufacturer series with lesser static pressure than the one with lower merv. How is that even possible? Simple:although the higher merv filters are more restrictive "per square inch" of filter material, they can compensate this deficiency by increasing the total surface area of the filter (this will further increase price though). A 20x20 high merv filter can have more overall surface area of the filtering media compared to a 20x20 lower merv filter by increasing the pleating density.

I got MERV 13 filters for fire season which never came. That's all I'd have those around for because they cut down the airflow from a box fan to almost nothing. I switched to MERV 8 about a month ago and the difference is massive. Much better for typical use. Also, even at the lowest speed, the suction effect from my box fan holds the MERV 8 filter to the back of it the the MERV 13 filter needed to be taped.

MERV 8 is good enough to cut out most dust in your house.

Your HVAC repair guy must love you if you're using MERV12.
Good grief, let's not start this again. it has been established that MERV 12 doesn't work your HVAC unit any harder.

I do recall our resident applicant repair guy (Biker Eric... RIP Sadwalk) telling us years ago that it was best to use the tighter weave/higher rated filters for newer furnaces but as the unit got older to use a looser weave as it puts less strain. No idea if that line of thought has changed over the years or not.

I mean the blower motor strength wouldn't weaken that much as it gets older for it to need loose weave/knit. It'd tax the furnace blower motor just the same either time
