I'm reposting this from another thread. The review linked above is for the 2020 (10th gen i3 model)

I'm pretty sure the 2021 model is a 250nit IPS screen (Not amazing but very respectable for the price range)

This link review is for an AMD version, but I think it's the same chassis and screen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S...d7o&t=386s

A lot of people are comparing the 2020 to 2021 models (F512 to F513) I had the F512 2020 model on order and briefly checked it out in the store but actually own the F513.

I think it's important to note that cosmetically they are VERY different.

The 2021 model:
- No rubber feet on back of folding hinge (this may have been a durability issue on the 2020 model)
- Chiclet instead of island keys (an improvement IMHO)
- Different color (Navy/Black vs Dark Gray on the F512)
- Colored Enter key (gimmicky but does stand out)

And the big one - maybe…

THE SCREEN

I can confirm the older Vivobooks had awful TN screens that are washed out and distort easily.

The 2021 F513 definitely has a better screen. I cannot figure out if it is IPS or TN, but if it's a TN, it's as good as my Dell Inspiron with a 270Nit IPS. It's not as bright or vivid as my Galaxy Pro 15 but MILES better that the 1080p TN on my Samsung Chromebook 4 plus.

I would like to confirm if the screen is IPS or TN, but when I use it back to back with my other laptops, it strikes me as decently average in a much improved way than before!
Back lit keyboard for those people living on the Dark Side, as they apparently do with this screen.

edit: BeSpoke Black... Wink

8GB on board with one slot maybe?

https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/F.../techspec/

2280 drive and a 2.5" bay?

the processor has 48 Iris Xe cores.

And, I guess, if anyone cares, the AMD version has a 100% sRGB, 300 nits screen available for those willing to try to change the screen.

I bought this deal last time it was posted. Overall good laptop especially for the price, but as others have said the screen is really dim. Have to use at near full brightness indoors. Also the battery life is terrible even after removing bloatware and applying battery saver settings. I get 3-4 hours of usage
Indoors, I usually end up around 140 nits because that's what usually I watch movies at. So I get used to that for work. I usually run this at perhaps 60% on the brightness slider which is fine for me.

Is the hard drive removable and able to be upgraded?
The NVMe drive is a 2280 format and will take whatever gen 3 PCIe drive. The 2.5" SSD needs a cable and some what to secure it in that space. Some people use foam and/or doublesided tape.

This ASUS deal or a Gateway deal?

https://slickdeals.net/f/15281635-gateway-15-6-fhd-ultra-slim-notebook-amd-ryzen-5-3450u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-319?v=1

It's for my daughter who just broke her laptop that she uses for school (6th grade).

Thanks!

Having owned both, the Vivobook's build is much higher quality. As to whether you fall on the single core performance of the intel or the multi-core but slower AMD depends on what you think her use is. I am pretty sure her use would be served by either, but in normal use the Vivobook feels significantly faster to me - at half the core and thread count of the AMD.

You can get 500gb usb C external ssd for 80 bucks, seems like that would be easier

To tell the you the truth I often swap in parts just because.

I'm like the old guy who drives below the speed limit in his golf hat.

BTW, I'm going to do a clean install of Windows 10 LTSC...

On 11th Gen Intel it REQUIRES Intel RST drivers even if I'm not going to do RAID because of VMD?

Because specs have gotten so high on the other end if the spectrum this is entry level netbook quality and should be about $250 to $300..

Great laptop. Anti glare screen. Fingerprint reader for login works great. Starts in a jiffy. V impressed. Wish it had usb c charger, but can live without it at this price point.
Also bought the Costco Lenovo IdeaPad 3 for $510. Will compare the two when it arrives

Is this Asus computer a better deal than this one?

https://slickdeals.net/f/15271672-gateway-15-6-ultra-slim-notebook-amd-ryzen-5-3450u-1080p-16gb-ram-256gb-ssd-349-free-shipping?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

I'm going to be doing basic Video editing at low resolutions and need a good cheap laptop.

What if my primary use was basic video editing. Using a program such as Vegas Pro and working with mostly lower resolution video content. Which of the above laptops would you choose?
