I'm reposting this from another thread. The review linked above is for the 2020 (10th gen i3 model)

I'm pretty sure the 2021 model is a 250nit IPS screen (Not amazing but very respectable for the price range)

This link review is for an AMD version, but I think it's the same chassis and screen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S...d7o&t=386s

A lot of people are comparing the 2020 to 2021 models (F512 to F513) I had the F512 2020 model on order and briefly checked it out in the store but actually own the F513.

I think it's important to note that cosmetically they are VERY different.

The 2021 model:
- No rubber feet on back of folding hinge (this may have been a durability issue on the 2020 model)
- Chiclet instead of island keys (an improvement IMHO)
- Different color (Navy/Black vs Dark Gray on the F512)
- Colored Enter key (gimmicky but does stand out)

And the big one - maybe…

THE SCREEN

I can confirm the older Vivobooks had awful TN screens that are washed out and distort easily.

The 2021 F513 definitely has a better screen. I cannot figure out if it is IPS or TN, but if it's a TN, it's as good as my Dell Inspiron with a 270Nit IPS. It's not as bright or vivid as my Galaxy Pro 15 but MILES better that the 1080p TN on my Samsung Chromebook 4 plus.

I would like to confirm if the screen is IPS or TN, but when I use it back to back with my other laptops, it strikes me as decently average in a much improved way than before!
Back lit keyboard for those people living on the Dark Side, as they apparently do with this screen.

edit: BeSpoke Black... Wink

8GB on board with one slot maybe?

https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/F.../techspec/

2280 drive and a 2.5" bay?

the processor has 48 Iris Xe cores.

And, I guess, if anyone cares, the AMD version has a 100% sRGB, 300 nits screen available for those willing to try to change the screen.

The lower resolution part is important though and may, may, make "bargain" laptops workable.

But there aren't any bargain laptops that have color-accurate screens, but if you are just cutting and splicing together segments (-->> basic editing normal people do) you MIGHT be able to live with either the gateway ultra-slim $349 (quad core) or this one. At any rate if you are cost constrained, you use what's available. Sorry that's the best I have.

I bought Costco Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 5700U for $495 shipped with tax (as got $100 off ontop of $150 discount). but having wifi issues and reading about hinge issues, which having dealt with them before on other laptop and were not covered under any warranty (OEM or CITI), I am returning.it and thinking of getting this. It is for GF that just uses cricut design space so assume this can handle that. I am currently using an HP 14" i3-8130U with 4gb ram and it works when you just need a windows machine to run programs that wont run on Chromebook. Hopefully this ASUS VivoBook will work for her.

Ignoring the size and slight price difference, how these two laptop compare (will be used for study. Mostly will run sas, spss, R, and stata). I am concerned about built quality and future proofing mainly.

Hi,

Not well versed with tech these days. Wondering if anyone could share some insight as to which would be a better deal:

https://slickdeals.net/f/15276535-costco-members-lenovo-ideapad-3-15-6-touchscreen-11th-gen-intel-core-i5-1135g7-1080p-12gb-512-ssd-510-499-99-shipping?src=frontpage

Just looking for an everyday laptop to browse internet and vid conference. Thanks!

I don't know enough about how stat packages work to know which computer would be better. I didn't even know there was a PC version of SAS. Are you doing econ work?

This vivobook is definitely built better though.

IMO, browsing the internet and streaming video conferencing is not going to stress out either. The 1135G7 has twice the cores and threads with a more capable integrated GPU. If you don't mind the extra cost, it will serve you well.

Modern laptops have become so capable only "heavy" tasks like serious video editing etc needs the "best" processors with multiple, fast cores with as much memory as you can get.

I ended up choosing the $349 Walmart Gateway over this. I'm doing video editing and the quad core on the Gateway helps speed up rendering and "preview" rendering. The dual core on this system may have a higher clock speed for single core tasks, but quad core will always win when it comes to more intensive applications.

Sad, because the SSD in this is faster than the Gateway, the keyboard is a lot better and has backlight, Bluetooth 5 (ASUS) is better than 4.2 on the Gateway, and the touchpad is better.

In my opinion the Gateway has a brighter screen with better viewing angles. It has two USB 3 ports on the correct side. This vivobook only had one USB 3 on the right side (although you could probably buy an adapter to make the USB-C port a standard 3.0 if neeed).

The Gateway has 16gb of RAM.

It's true that the build quality of the ASUS is better than the Walmart Gateway, but it all comes down to CORES for me. If the ASUS was a quad core, I'd definitely choose it.

Good specs for the price, entry level or student laptop. I would bite with at least a 4 core, I can upgrade ram and ssd.

Asus Vivobook i3-1115G4 2c/4T, 8 GB RAM dual channel, plugged in set to Max Perf:
I just ran geekbench 5, 1301 single core score. 2579 multi-core

My HP eh-1075cl ryzen 5700U 8c/16T, plugged in set to Max Perf:
I got 1192 single core, 6751 multi-core

Gateway "Super-slim" 15.6" $349 16GB RAM, Ryzen 3450U, ~800 single core, 2900 multi-core

IF you need multi-core - buy the most and fastest AMD cores you can find. If you don't need it because you don't do those tasks that require it (compiling code, Heavy high-res video editing, etc) it will always feel a little slower than even a bottom of the line 11th gen intel in "regular" single-core tasks. Thus buying more cores isn't necessarily future-proofing. It depends on what you need.
