Is there some thing about this particular brand that does better than the one you get for $15 at Walmart? Other than look nice?

On the flipside, this or hold out for MEATER to have a sale?

Reliability and accuracy. I can't speak to this model, I had a ThermoPop for several years and recently got the Thermapen, and they are easily on another level to the competitors I've tried. The Thermapens are made in England, their cheaper models are made in Asia but seem to still be top notch.

That said, I want a Meater Block myself. I love the idea of a cordless thermo probe that also does ambient temp, but I want at least 2 probes.

I know people are like that these days, but I always have and see no reason to stop.

I bought a "Super-Fast" from these guys years ago, we ended up with another because when we could not find it and used our cheapos it was always disappointing.

Super-Fast is cheaper @ $30, more accurate, and reads faster but has less of a temp range. Unless you need to read over 302F or below -40F its only drawback I believe is the display not being as good, but its also angled toward you which IMO is a win. I think only very few candies would need over 300F. In my case, I use them for meat. The pops always get the love on this site though.

Meater looks super cool and the reviews have definitely improved since I last checked, I am still be skeptical of the longevity.

Super
SpecificationsRange -40 to 302°F (-40 to 150°C)
Accuracy±0.9°F (±0.5°C ) between 14 to 212°F (-10 to 100°C), otherwise ±2.7°F (±1.5°C)

Thermopop
Probe Range -58 to 572°F (-50 to 300°C)
Accuracy±2.0°F (±1°C) from -4 to 248°F (-20 to 120°C); ±4.0°F (±2°C) thereafter

To be fair, I have never used a Thermopop.

I have one of these and really like it. There are a variety of probes available from Thermoworks if desired, magnet to stick to oven, kickstand for use next to the grill, alarm you can set when you reach desired temp. The only wish I've ever had was the ability to set an alarm on the way down as well but I know that's not typically what you use a thermometer for.

The MEATER probe is way too big. You gouge a massive hole in whatever you're cooking, which especially sucks for steaks that are an inch thick.
