You MUST pay with a VISA for this deal and you MUST enable autorenewal. Check your account after purchasing your membership and make sure to enable autorenewal, if it is not already enabled. You can always disable this later, after you receive your promotional gift card and coupon.
Your membership will expire next year, in the same month, on the last day of the month you started your membership. So, if you signed up on Sept 1 or Sept 30 of this year, your membership would end on Sept 30 2022, either way. Therefore, it is always advantageous to join as close to the beginning of a month as possible therefore getting essentially 13 months of membership for the price of 12.
This isn't specifically relevant to this deal, but, another thing to note regarding membership timing is that not having autorenewal enabled does not mean that Costco still won't get you. If you purchase a new membership within 2 months of when your membership old membership expired, Costco will backdate your new membership to the end date of your old membership, such that you will actually lose 2 months of the new ship you are purchasing. This isn't some secret sneaky policy either - It's right in the publicly posted membership agreement. They will move the start of your membership date to the date that you actually signed up if you complain, but you'll have to fight them for it.
A few important points from the terms that constantly came up the last time this deal was offered:
• The Shop (Gift) Card will be mailed 4 to 6 weeks after sign-up.
• The $40 off $250+ Costco.com coupon will be emailed 1-2 weeks after sign-up.
• Valid for NEW memberships only.
To qualify as a new member, an existing Costco membership must be EXPIRED at least 18 MONTHS or more.

"Saw this $30 offer at Costco and thought of you!" https://gpay.app.urlhas
Also, Dosh has $20 CB for a Costco membership - executive only for in-store, but gold-star or Executive for online sign ups. Dosh does require a click-through and I'm not sure if that website will allow entry of the promo code. Plus, I didn't notice any confirmations on the last deal's thread that Dosh worked with this deal, so YMMV. It might still be worth giving it a shot for an extra $20.
You should be able to double dip dosh and Google Pay offers.
So if I signed up for this under a new email and go in to apply in a month or so would Costco look it up and see I haven't been not a member for very long and disqualify me??
One thing to keep in mind, if you sign up under a "whole new account" anything you purchased before may not be returned under the new membership.
My plan is to just let my membership laps a few months the sign up again around the holidays. If they want to keep jacking the price up, I'll just subsidize it by not renewing for a few months, lowering my overall month to month cost.
Beware that you may be being lied to, jerked around, and paying full price for membership. No deal at all (I ended up canceling and getting my $60 back out of principle)
Costco customer service is not the same as it used to be.
I am done with Costco. [The hotdogs were regularly undercooked anyway in Moore OK, BTW]. Sam's Club is just fine for me.
You've been warned.

Hope it works out the same.
Did you see if it requires an automatic VISA renewal? I haven't been a member in at least 10 years, but I don't have a VISA card.

pretty sure something like a new ID, new email, new phone number, and maybe even new address.

I'm interested in purchasing this for my brother who lost his Costco membership in the divorce. I know it's supposed to be 18 months for a new membership but I think it's only been about a year for him. Would they deny him a membership at the front desk?

They employees know it, says it is a glitch yet to be fixed. But, it really does save time.
I ultimately got the Costco credit card since I wanted the extended warranty on some bigger ticket items (tv, laptop, washer, dryer, fridge, etc).
Hypothetical question...if I cancel my existing membership (and have the wife sign up), does that mean I forfeit the extended warranty? What if I wanted to return something purchased with my membership, but the membership is no longer active?
