Someone crashed into a power pole a few days ago near my block. I was out of power for only 7 hours. Some people were out all night until the next day. Idiot season is always in full.

Indeed. "Peak" Atlantic hurricane activity is August-September-October, and the official season is June-November.

I thought all AiPowers used Yamaha engines? What engine does this use?

As an aside, they had this for $399 back in July. I bought one then but returned it because they removed the 12V output on it in favor of anemic USB ports. I wasn't expecting that, because some reviews and product literature referred to the 12V output & included cables. When I called AiPower to inquire/complain about it, they said a change was made recently and they hadn't updated the manual yet.

Also, it claims to come with oil but does not--I saw that in the reviews and that was my experience as well. Not really a big deal though as you'd want to make sure you're putting good quality oil in these.

Otherwise it seemed like a nice generator (I didn't power it on though since I knew I was going to return it).

The Champion is probably worth the extra $50 because it's lighter, quieter and has the 12V output (at least the Amazon version does, I think the Walmart version is USB)
Quote from jj2978 :
How does this compare to the deal for the Champion? http://https://slickdeals.net/f/15260716-champion-power-equipment-2000-watt-dual-fuel-gas-propane-in... [https]

I found a comparison site and it seems this one is a better deal based off of that.https://generatorbible.com/compar...6013,18160

Any thoughts? I'd like one of this for camping and emergency use. TIA.

Strictly speaking, for Camping the A-iPower generator is the better one since it has a TT-30 output, which if you get a camper in the future will let you plug into the camper and free up the normal outlets.

Typically you'll need the TT-30 for running things like an A/C unit.

Yeah, Costco still sells that one with the Yamaha engine---it's got a blue case, but otherwise looks identical to the SUA2300i, which is red (which I picked up for $250 a few years back ast Sams Club). I've also heard that rumor that it has a genuine Yamaha engine but for some reason AiPower didn't get the OK to advertise it as a real Yamaha. Who knows.
Costco one is not dual fuel.

for that price I was thinking about getting 8 18V ryobi 4.0 ah, and building something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAAWFCU4iEM

It is up to you how to use your money, but don't even dream on using this set up to power your fridge for a few hours during a blackout. Your got the wattage output but for a very short time. Do the math. 4Ah x 18V x number of batteries. For a 5A 120V appliance, you have less than an hour of run time even if there is no energy loss during the transformation.

The inverter alone is $370 laugh out loud plus all the other crap, and you need a massive amount of batteries that cost a ton of $$ themselves ($80/ea). Dewalt [lowes.com]makes a 1800/3600 unit that basically does the same thing, also charges the batteries, that costs $500 (honestly probably still cheaper than what you can hack together from that video). I don't think either is really useful, as the total amount of power is low (Wh) and the number of batteries you'd need is huge - can you imagine being on a job site and constantly swapping batteries out? Then you have to charge them somewhere.....

8, 18V 4Ah batteries will yield about 576Wh total, which means that it could run an average fridge for about an hour (avg fridge is 350-780W).

Seems like a massive spend for something of little utility.

I already have the batteries that's why I was pushing that direction. But i guess i will keep the batteries idea for my PC backup project.

Its not the same thing though, many people would happily pay $20 more to get a dual fuel generator.

I bought a small generator a month ago and it came in handy when I lost power for about 13hours after Hurricane Nicholas. I got a 1900watt Wen and was able to power the internet router and modem, a couple of laptops, TV, fridge, and a floor fan without any issues.

The generator made such a big difference in quality of life for the hours when power was out. It's well worth the money.

Personal experience - dual fuel is nice but not a deal breaker. In general, my experience has been that using ethanol free gas and using a fuel shutoff to let it run dry at the end of each use is fine. I always keep it fueled and full so it's ready when I need it.

My strategy has always been to size a generator for emergencies - so I have two 2k Champion inverter generators. I sometimes run just 1, sometimes both in parallel depending on load requirements. 1 generator can keep my fridge and furnace (or chest freezer) running with lights, tv while running both in parallel lets me run a portable a/c unit or a gas dryer, or multiple larger loads at once. I also like the redundancy of having 2 smaller units so if 1 won't start, I always have a backup.

I checked the use log on one of my Champion 2k inverter generators and you can see it has sat for > 1 year with no issues. Using regular gas without stabilizers is the #1 reason for your generator not starting after sitting for a long time. Since inverter generators don't use a lot of gas to run, switching from pump gas to ethanol free was a no brainer, the few extra $ for ethanol free gas was worth the peace of mind.
March 2019 - break in and test
July 2019 - power outage (~ 5 days)
Oct 2020 - test
Nov 2020 - oil change and test
Aug 2021 - power outage

My planning for emergency prep and gas storage will get me by for 3 - 5 days without having to go out to get gas.
1 x 6-gallon container with ethanol free fuel - for shorter outages when I know power will be back within a day
1 x 2.5-gallon container with ethanol free fuel for easy refueling, since it's a pain to try refilling an inverter generator tank with a heavy 6 gallon container.
1 x 5-gallon regular pump gas + stabilizer (refreshed annually, just dump it in my car and get fresh gas around Thanksgiving) - for longer outages.

Sometimes, I will add a 2nd 5-gallon container if I know a bad thunderstorm or winter warning is in the news just to give me an extra 1 - 2 days in case outages are widespread and it's difficult to find gas stations that have power or gas. My last backup is that I can also siphon gas from the car's gas tank if needed (have 2 cars).

All of these 2000w to 2300w generators seems to have the same 79cc engine. I guess the 2300w ones are going to be more strained and pushed to the edge.

Besides the Honda, I think only the 2500w Westinghouse generator stands out because it actually has a bigger engine.

I got the Sportsman dual fuel inverter generator last year and we just went through a 4 days blackout last month. With propane, the output is 10-15% lower and the running cost is higher. However, it has the advantage of being ready anytime if you have a propane bottle around from your grill. I just used the near full tank from >10 years ago to run the inverter for 20+ hours. No need to keep gasoline around if you don't have any other gas powered equipment and less maintenance to do when you run the generator with propane. With the small gas tank, it only runs for ~7-8 hours between refill. For the 4+ days blackout, I only used around 25 pounds of propane to keep a fridge and chest freezer running during the day (but keep it off between 10:30pm and 7am). I have 2 propane tanks and I can get refilled tank exchange at any home improvement or grocery stores around home as well as some gas station. During the 4 day blackout in 2003, the closest gas station that had the pump working was 30 miles away.

Interesting this is about $50 less expensive from WalMart vs. Sam's Club: https://www.samsclub.com/p/aipowe...product_11
