I own the older 000-X1, and it's been a great guitar for over a decade. It has great intonation, pretty full tone, and a low action, which I really need due to carpal tunnel syndrome. I paid between $500-$600 for mine with the hardcase about 15 years ago. At this price, I'd consider this a great buy for novice-to-intermediate players who want to step into a pro-quality guitar without paying a pro-quality price.

My session guitar is a Taylor 614ce, but I still occasionally use my 000-X1 on recordings to get more tonal variety since it's a very capable studio instrument. Yet I also feel comfortable taking it out for camping/beach trips since it's not an insanely expensive instrument either. For many players, I think this deal will hit a great price-to-quality ratio.

Pretty sure top is solid. Sides and back are HPL (combo is characteristic of this line of guitars). Definitely sounds different compared to other brands and their laminated offerings. It's a little more boxy sounding and biased towards bass in other guitars that I've heard with HPL. Also interesting is that the scale on this guitar is 24.9" vs 25.4". Some may find it easier to play as the strings are under less tension. Trade-off is some volume. It's already a smaller body compared to a dreadnought so it may come off more boxy sounding when you couple it with the HPL.

That being said, a good setup to improve the action goes a long way. Martin's neck profile is very comfortable. I'm somewhat leery about the durability of HPL compared to other laminates. Very difficult repair as it tends to shred into layers. Don't leave it in the sun or in a hot car!

At this price, sure. There are other beginner rigs that are cheaper for new players that are also very good. However this one will last well into becoming an advanced player.

A very easy action is critical for a beginner. A luthier can set this rig up for you that way. Out of the box it may not suit a new player. As you advance this rig can advance with you.

A lot of folks underestimate a good luthier, especially for a beginner.

Since some people are asking. HPL is basically formica. It's not a laminate in the sense most other laminates are (plywood). It's not really wood. Martin uses paper and resin and compresses them at high pressure. Then they put a graphic on it, usually a wood grain pattern, although they've had solid colors or other prints.

HPL is more durable than wood and not as sensitive to temperatures, although I've seen/heard complaints about how well it stays glued. But that doesn't seem to happen very often. HPL is noticeably heavy. It sounds surprisingly good for a non-wood material, but as far as I know, they've never used it on high end stuff. Presumably because solid wood is better.

I have one and this is a great guitar. However, KEEP IT IN A CASE! I learned the hard way that the HPL back and sides do not move with humidity changes like wood. That's great, but when you attach it to a real wood top that moves you are in for some splitting. My top started separating from the sides creating a nasty gap. I took it in to my local shop (Chicago Music Exchange) for repairs and they said this is extremely common with these HPL guitars. Other than that one issue I absolutely love this guitar. Would I buy one again? At this price absolutely. At the price I paid for it, probably not.

I totally disagree. After getting my dx1-ae set up at a shop it is nice to play and sounds amazing. Sounds like you need to take it for a tune up and get the action lowered? I do not really use it on a amp so maybe that's what you mean?
