  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores

    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

just picked up my iphone 13 pro max blue 128gb and here is the entire process:
Im upgrading / trading my iphone 11 pro max .
Pre-ordered yesterday 09/23/2021 around 10 AM.
got a text an email this morning saying its ready to pick up.( was kinda surprised about this , but ig because this best buy has less people preordered , or got more stock , im in missouri)
I backed up my old phone to my computer . and reset the phone.
Got to best buy( I was one of the first 3 people there so i got help right away) , the guy asked me for my order number and name, then told me to get with a lady.
the entire pick up was about 15 mins, she asked for my id , then my old phone, she spent most of the time input stuff into the system. I confirmed on the machine my info is correct. she handed me the new iphone new in box with a sim card on top. I asked if she need to activate the phone or anything and she said no , when i put in the phone it should activate it self. got the phone and the receipt , now im heading home.
She didnt open the new phone box at all , she didnt ask if I need to transfer my old phone data to the new phone ( might be she noticed my old phone got reset)

iPhone 13/pro is the weakest upgrade.
Only do it if you have a iPhone 8 or below.
Not worth $700/800 after all the hassle that you have to go through.
Your XR should be good through iPhone 14

You don't have to pay off the EIP to trade in at Best Buy.

Wait.. I thought they cant trade in any device under EIP until it was paid off?? After the trade in, does the new device show up?
If this is true, this opens up a whole new ball park for me.. I have two iPhones under EIP i could potentially upgrade to 13 for 79-$ 99. I'm ok with this..

That's only if you're trading in to T-mobile. I traded in 2 iPhones this way. Only thing they asked me about the phones is if anything's wrong with them. Yes, after you activate the new phone it will show up on your account but your existing EIP and any bill credits will still be intact.

If you already have a SE, it doesn't hurt to try expect waste some time at the store. But don't go out an buy a SE for this glitch because it's most likely not going to work. The carriers don't matter and they only go by IMEI. Once the store enters the IMEI into the computer, the correct trade-in value will show it's $280.
That's not true. Did T-Mobile iPhone as Verizon, no questions asked, the trade-in was successful. All iPhones are the same regardless.

Did you get the $858.32 trade in value online for an iPhone SE 64GB white/red, and successfully pick up an iPhone 13 Pro and walk out with it?

Traded in pixel 4 over Mother's Day for iPhone 12 bill credit promo.
Traded that 12 in today for the 13.
Cost me $85, and now I'm running a paid off device. EIP credits still in place.
you need to rethink buy 13 pro/max, 13=12s

I had a very good pick up experience at Best Buy yesterday. I had ordered 3 upgrades (two 13 Pro Sierra Blue and a Red 13) online on the 19th. I had trade ins for all three lines (all iPhone 12 family). I got an email and text from Best Buy just before midnight on the 23rd saying that my order was ready to be picked up. I went there around 4PM. Had to wait for 15 minutes before they could find additional help to work with me. I had to show them my ID, and enter the last 4 digits of my SSN for verification (no finger printing like some others said in this forum). The gentleman then took about 15 minutes to enter the info for all three lines on his computer, and once done had me reset and erase all three trade ins. At this point I was expecting to be given the new phones and the sim cards and let us leave, but he went ahead and called T-mobile to activate all lines. From that point it took him about two hours to get all lines activated since they ran into issues with T-mobile wanting to verify my account. T-mobile wanted to send a one time code to my phone for verification, but that phone was already reset, and the new phone we are trying to activate is where the code will try to come! I also had no access to my T-mobile account since my trade in phone was reset. And using email for verifications did not work too since two factor authentication was turned on on my gmail and my second device was home (hindsight, I should have taken my iPad with me). After trying several options with T-mobile they decided to go to the back of the store to find my trade in, set it up again, verify the old sim was still active (T-mobile insisted it will be, and it was), and receive the code on the old phone. Once they had the code they were able to activate all three lines. Throughout the entire process, the Best Buy team was extremely helpful. At one point I was asking them to just let me leave so I can resolve this with T-Force (the person helping me was nearing his end of shift, and I felt bad keeping him late to resolve my first world problems), but they insisted that they would rather resolve everything there so I can walk out there with a peace of mind that everything works. Once I was home, I was able to get on T-Mobile's website and confirm that all devices were showing up on my account, and that the plan was untouched as many on this forum mentioned (thank you community for that).
The way they did for me was totally different than your. She pulled up my order # and show it had pending tradein. She checked my phone for damage or crack, entered my tradein IMEI, my personal info, new phone serial #, IMEI, sim card #. Asked me if I wanted to insert new simcard into the new phone. I said no, then she handed me the new phone + receipt and I was out the door in 15 mins. Got home, put in my current sim and boot up the new iphone. It works like charm. My current simcard is unrelated to the simcard and phone # that I used to place the order. In fact, the simcard with the phone # that I used to place the order are still working. So I guess I have an extra R15 simcard to use it later on. One thing I noticed that BB system recognized whether the phone had been reset or not. I had my reset button ready to go as she input my tradein IMEI, the system flagged that the phone hadn't reset. The moment I pressed the reset, BB system accepted my device and moved on to the next page. I stood there and saw the entire process. Pretty simple processes, don't know why BB doesn't do cross training. Only 1 employee know how to do the tradein, 3 or 4 employees just stood there and told people that they didn't know how to do it. I still have 1 more order waiting for pickup email, maybe I will show them where to go in their system if they say they don't know how.

Regretting ordering through best buy.

Went to store yesterday 10 am when chat said my phone was in store but hadn't been processed. Was told they didn't have tmobile Sims and was turned away because of that. Fast forward to last evening they said they don't do activations after 7 pm and gave me an appt for 10:30 am today assuring me that tmobile issues were resolved.

10:30 am I go to the store again and they say they just got Sims in and I can come back in an hour to get my phone. Come back after an hour and now they say my phone isn't actually in store even though their system said it was. Apparently if someone had ordered the same spec as me on tmobile would get first dibs on the phone and that's likely what happened. Wtf best buy? Absolutely ridiculous.

BestBuy rep told me I need to my trade-in phone before they can give me my new one. When I asked them that I need to transfer my data to new phone - they told me to use icloud sync. But not everything is in icloud and I need to transfer everything from my old phone and it could take an hour they were confused... Trying to call Best Buy to get some answers

Why can't you back it up onto your mac or pc? I backed up everything to my pc easy and fast. I just handed them the phone when they gave me the new one. Restored my new phone with the backup that I saved in my pc. Save ton of time at BB. You want to go in and out as quickly as possible, so they don't ask questions if you just sitting there and do backup and all that. I was in and out within 15-20 mins.

What happens if that one local backup on your PC/Mac gets corrupted? Now the device is wiped and traded in before you try to restore the backup on the new phone only to find out it won't work. Best practice is don't wipe the old device before making sure the new one is working properly.

Well, then be expected to be turn down by BB employees, they could careless if you're upset or not. A little planning will go along way and save you ton of time and make the employees job easy so they can help the next customer.

I did not pay it off. I pretended like it did not exist when selling the phone to Best Buy. So the remaining balance and bill credits still apply for the next 20ish months. But I'm not stuck on that phone.

That "planning" requires multiple copies of the backup and a secondary device to test restoring said backup before wiping the device to be traded in. With an IT background, I might be comfortable with that, but it would take much more time than a direct transfer to the new device.

Otherwise, you're gambling that the backup stored on your hard drive 1) was created successfully, 2) does not become corrupt, 3) is on a hard drive that doesn't die before you're able to restore it on the new device.

Sure, that's a rather slim chance but I learned back in elementary school that you don't just rely on saving important files in one place. Especially when that's the backup of all your valuable pictures, messages, etc.
