  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

just picked up my iphone 13 pro max blue 128gb and here is the entire process:
Im upgrading / trading my iphone 11 pro max .
Pre-ordered yesterday 09/23/2021 around 10 AM.
got a text an email this morning saying its ready to pick up.( was kinda surprised about this , but ig because this best buy has less people preordered , or got more stock , im in missouri)
I backed up my old phone to my computer . and reset the phone.
Got to best buy( I was one of the first 3 people there so i got help right away) , the guy asked me for my order number and name, then told me to get with a lady.
the entire pick up was about 15 mins, she asked for my id , then my old phone, she spent most of the time input stuff into the system. I confirmed on the machine my info is correct. she handed me the new iphone new in box with a sim card on top. I asked if she need to activate the phone or anything and she said no , when i put in the phone it should activate it self. got the phone and the receipt , now im heading home.
She didnt open the new phone box at all , she didnt ask if I need to transfer my old phone data to the new phone ( might be she noticed my old phone got reset)

iPhone 13/pro is the weakest upgrade.
Only do it if you have a iPhone 8 or below.
Not worth $700/800 after all the hassle that you have to go through.
Your XR should be good through iPhone 14

The 12 max I wanna upgrade is on EIP. Do I need to upgrade the line which the phone I'm upgrading shows connected to for the EIP?? Or does it not matter ?

Most likely either your account is not a personal account, or have some rate discount on it such as government, military discount. Best buy cannot handle these type of accounts. You will need to contact t-mobile to either change account type to personal or remove those discounts before the order can go through.

Are people really trading in their EIP phones that aren't paid off?

I'm not 100% sure on it. For the iPhone SE case, the order said trade-in value is $858, but I didn't see any success case for it. Trade-in value depends on the # that their trade-in system can provide. No guarantee the value is still same after one month.
The only success case I've seen in the other thread is a manager override. "It is online and on the order confirmation!" doesn't fly... I don't know why people expect BB to give double retail for an iPhone SE. It's an error, worth a shot, but don't expect it to happen.

Make sure you are looking at the right spot. I am also able to see my phone and IMEI when I login. From the main page, click on your phone line, then click the "Check device unlock status". If it says "Status unknown", etc, it's my understanding that it can't be unlocked until that changes.
Ah ok, i see it. You're right. It says Status Unknown under that page. Guess i gotta wait another 30 hours to get to 72 hours

I am also getting the same error online and in-store. No success and in-store reps also doesn't have clue. I need to check with my primary account holder to see if there are any special discounts applied to my account which is not letting BB access it.

I am going there tomorrow with my iPhone Se ( it's ready for pick up). Will post the results later. I don't why it wouldn't go through if you ordered and got done everything online. My TM iPhone went through fine with additional $100 trade-in credit. Online and credit card are all showing correct amount.

Good luck. Already tried Friday and didn't work. Also not a fan of BB opening my phone on another pickup without asking whether I wanted setup help first.

Ymmv with opening of packages, it's not unique to Best Buy. Did you order online and they did not honor it? What exactly happened?

People are just weird to think that EIP is something similar to a vehicle loan.
Last I checked, there is no repo for the phone. It's yours when you bought it with or without EIP. If you stop paying t-mobile, the balance goes to your credit. They ain't want that phone back.
Now, if you have a JoD phone, then the phone is a loaner. You broke, lost or traded it in, then you pay for it.

I tried trading in a SE on Friday and they did everything they could including calling the escalation line to see if they could credit me the $858.55 it showed but the value of the phone kept coming up at $68. I spent almost 1.5 hours there with them trying to help me.
