  • How Trade-In Works:
    1. Calculate your trade-in phone's value
    2. Buy your new phone online
    3. Complete your new phone purchase online and activate your phone on the carrier's network (Best Buy will help with all that.)
    4. Pick up your new phone in one of our stores
    5. Bring your trade-in phone with you when you pick up your new one. Best Buy will check to make sure you're trading in the same phone you told them about online and check for any damage that might make your trade-in ineligible for the promotion.
    6. Best Buy will take your trade-in's value off the cost of your new phone.
      • Trade-in value is calculated to represent a working phone that turns on and does not have a cracked or broken screen. Your phone will be evaluated when you trade it in to validate that it meets all requirements.
      • Your order must be picked up from a store to complete your trade-in and apply its value to your new phone purchase.

Picked up my phones on Friday, when the supervisor at Best Buy got things working on the system again, and tossed in free screen protectors and knocked $100 off per phone. They did have to open and activate both phones on the spot and charge me for the 2 sim cards, but T-Mobile was nice enough to refund me the cost for them when I messaged them over Facebook.

Unlocking the phones is different matter since the T-Mobile rep told me that the phones come unlocked from Best Buy but they were locked to the sims that was used to activate the phones. So they are working on unlocking them and hopefully that can be done in the next couple of days.
What info did you need to provide T-mobile for the unlock? They asked me for my IMEI number and when I gave it to them, they told me it didn't match with what was in their system which actually ended up being the IMEI2 number..

Still waiting for the unlock here.

After the first order got messed up with the SIM card number thing, the BestBuy people eventually gave up even on my recreated order because they couldn't get access to the T-Mobile account info again. (That part worked fine on the original order.)

My best guess of the problem is that the phone number I was upgrading got stuck in a partial transfer, because of the cancelled order. I also could not re-order myself on the BestBuy site now.

I contacted T-Mobile and transferred the number back to the original phone (the trade in) on a new SIM. This actually seemed to fix the BestBuy order system. But now when I tried to reorder the phone, I can't simply because every model is out of stock within 100 miles and you can't pick up at a later date. I guess the phone has to be in stock at this exact moment? I would not mind waiting a few weeks, I just want to work when I show up the store. But I do not want to drive 200 miles.

Already spend at least 8 hours in BestBuy on this stuff. I'll skip this iPhone generation I guess. Jeez.

Ironically I'm doing this upgrade FOR my father's phone. I'm still using a beater. (It's not an authorization thing, I'm authorized on the account and had no problems at the T-Mobile store for example.)

Does anyone know if they'll accept a phone with a extremely cracked back but intact screen, camera and no water damage?

I'm sorry you had such a Terrible time… I did 5 phones and besides having to find stock I went to like 3 Best Buys and took me 20 mins each time… in and out with a sealed box and sim.

I gave them the IMEI. They didn't specify that they needed the IMEI2.

I believe it is dependent on the line that phone is on. They had (maybe still do) some limit on how many unlocks you get per year. We are using the phone on lines that we have had for years, so they never gave me any issue before.

They probably charged him because they gave him the free screen saver!
