checking off all the stereotypes

For real though, learn with her, no reason a single dad can't sew.

The human psyche is flawed. You should always go by an aggregate of the most recent reviews over most helpful.
1) recent isn't biased by interesting stories, humor or irrelevant information
2) if the product has changed, that will be reflected in most recent
3) it's simply a more fair sampling of reviews, you're more likely to have an experience similar to a most recent review than a popular review

I'm so disillusioned with popular reviews on Amazon. People say and upvote the dumbest shit. I look at 10-20 recent reviews and have never felt misled.

Except the negative reviews are listed at the top because people marked them most helpful, not because people prefer negative reviews. The helpful tick is essentially a peer review by other customers confirming the product's condition as well as thankful potential customers who found that information valuable.

The most recent reviews are flawed because you should not base your purchase on the recent purchase by someone who potentially did not care or did not provide enough information about the product.

It is better to sort by newest reviews for photos of the product, by oldest to see how the product has changed overtime and manufacturer responses, and by most helpful to see common issues and solutions.

Ordered one for my daughter's 12th birthday. She likes this kind of stuff, but as a single dad, Youtube will have to be her teacher

Popular isn't necessarily a fair sampling though. Users could see an issue described that happened to one person and no others and be like "whoa, glad I dodged that bullet, have an upvote!". It being similar to peer review would only be true if upvoters tended to also be people who had used the product and agreed with that review, and while this is technically unknowable for us I'm strongly inclined to believe upvoters are mostly people shopping, not product owners agreeing.

There's also no additional guarantee that popular reviews care, that their information is accurate, or that the product you will receive is the same as when they reviewed it. Hell, I've seen so many more comments from people reviewing stuff that they got for free in popular reviews than in recent. I'd rather look at 20 somewhat randomly sampled star ratings than the immense bias that is added through popular reviews. If there are common issues, they will be reflected in recent, and based on the number of times you see it mentioned, you can infer the likelihood of it affecting you much more accurately than based on the upvotes of a bunch of window shoppers....

edit: clarity

Aw man… I kinda want it, but I learned to sew in junior high on the old mechanical machines with only two knobs for settings. All those buttons scare me.

I thought learning how to sew would save me money by fixing my old clothes..

But now I go shopping and since I know how to alter basic shirts/pants to fit me perfectly, I'm able to buy more crap instead of avoiding it like in the past lol.

Oh well, at least I can turn a $3 shirt into a $5 looking shirt! LOL

From personal experience, there is a learning curve and you won't need to use any of those nobs
