the number of times i've had to force close/restart a fire tv is…well, more than i can count. netflix has been broken on it for as long as amazon's had streaming devices (they seemingly don't want it to work well). the number of ads on the fire homepage is obscene. the slowness/lag for the menu ui is a huge drag.
none of these problems have showed up for me on the apple tv.
i would not recommend it to those who can't really afford it, but if you have the disposable income, it really does make your streaming tv watching life easier…
…which i realize is the most obscene and privileged sentence i've ever written
However, for people that have the means and want an effortless entire system for their grandparents, parents, and non tech savvy spouses, you can't beat it. Everything just works.
I have yet to see anything across all android devices that comes close.
Personally, I have a 2017 nvidia shield, but I would get this Apple TV for anyone else in my life without question since it will make my life easier when they have any tech issue.
I used to have iPhones for my wife and I, fire sticks on the TVs and fire tablets for the kids. The wife could never figure out how to work the kids tablets on road trips and it was challenging using the fire stick (yes, I realize they are pretty easy to use). Replaced them all with iPads and Apple TV's and don't hear one gripe from the wife about how she can't "fix" any of them. Worth every penny!!

32GB for $134
64GB for $152
Fire tv (gen 2) worked great, used it with kodi and all that, only upgraded for more current 4K offerings
2nd gen shield tv, worked great, and still use it to this day. Fast, responsive, only occasional issues
4K fire tv stick (latest gen) absolute garbage. Glitchy, slow, apps crash all the time, can't hardly use it
Latest Apple TV, given to me as a gift, works pretty well, newer remote is better than before, but had serious issues on initial setup that required a factory reset and a second go around of setup to fix. Seems to work better now.
So with that said, everyone seems to have a device the prefer, but if it were me I'd probably lean towards the latest nvidia shield pro and call it a day. To each their own I guess.

There may be some people who probably won't care about the performance difference, but what I think makes AppleTV shine, is the consistency.
