Just a heads up - this company does some major bait and switch. I got the Flume 1 and they have consistently removed features since launch, including the text alerts which were pretty critical as that was one of the only ways to setup multi device alerts.

I've had this for a few months now after dealing with some ridiculous high water bills.

It's a nice to have and is probably a savior to some, but I've soured a bit on the company after they've introduced this subscription plan. Allegedly, I'm grandfathered into their "detailed" data and AI stuff, but it's the same data that was available prior to their subscription model, so just an annoying money grab IMO.

Setup is surprisingly easy and is seemingly very accurate. Guess overall it's recommended if you're seriously worried about leaks, but you're going to get a lesser product than it was prior to the subscription, or pay more in their subscription to get access to their data metrics.

No, this will not turn off water. It is a strap on device which reads the electromagnetic fields from the existing city flow meter. The use case for this is it will read your water and tell you when you are using more, from there you have to shut off the source. There is a competing product called Flo by Moen. It is ~$400 on Amazon. It has an auto shut off feature, but it must be installed on your main pipe. So you will need a licensed plumber (or be handy enough to do it yourself). Some insurance companies do offer discounts on Flo by Moen as it does have the potential to save you thousands in water damage.

No - it's like a CIA listening device: it has a magnetic sensor which listens for the varying signature of the municipal flowmeter's magnetized flow disk as it spins around. From that signal, it determines the rate of spin and, in turn, the flow. It's why some muni meters don't work - they can't detect the magnetic spinny thing on some, either because of the type of spinny thing or because the muni line meter unit is too well shielded (or too poorly shielded).

I tried this but ended up returning it.. it did detect leaks, however, it would not detect leaks that were low-flow enough for me to warrant using it. If I turned a bathroom faucet on about 1/4 of the way open, it would not detect the flow.. I'd have to go to about 1/3rd of the way open for it to detect the flow. Same with slow-leaking irrigation - a slow leaking irrigation valve would not be detected, but a wide open valve would be. If I had a dripping toilet fitting or something similar, unfortunately I don't think this would detect it.

I'm sure this would be useful for a lot of people, just know it may not pick up very low-flow/minor leaks. I ended up buying a bunch of individual smart leak detectors and putting them under every sink/toilet/etc.

Same! Since I have bought the Moen flow it has saved me three times! Twice being two different flappers stuck on toilets where it shut the water off in the third time where it showed I had water leaking from somewhere and upon investigation it was my outdoor water hydrant leaking under the ground. As an added benefit the device shuts off the water if it detects abnormal use so when my teenage kids are in the shower too long it shuts them off automatically! They are like "Dad why did you turn off the water" and I explained that there's nothing I can do! (There is a snooze button for times like when I'm filling up my pool but I don't tell them that)

No local API - only cloud-based API for this. They seem to be trying to create on-going revenue stream like every other company, but I'm not sure their Insight program is really all that useful over the base offering.

Anyone comment on the accuracy/sensitivity? You fill a one gallon bucket at different rates on one of your faucets, is it able to see the full gallon?

I've engaged in testing these devices for a utility. They do not typically interfere with either the displacement meter or automated meter reading devices. However, it is appropriate to get permission from your utility before attaching a private device to their meter.

Flume can work with any agency that has concerns.

If you are into tinkering with stuff and not just strapping a commercially available device, look into using RTL-SDR to read meters. There is a huge project on github called rtl_433 that supports various meters, not only water, but also natgas and electric ones. It's obviously not comparable in terms of efforts required to set things up, but your possibilities are nearly endless with rtl_433 if your meter is supported (!)

just checked, I had mine since 6/2020 and it still shows all 3 battery bars in the app. No idea how long the battery should last though.

This is good info, but the Flume is a different device. It doesn't actually read the meter RF like you would with a RTL-SDR. It senses the rotation of the magnetic signature of the internal flow sensors and filters the signal to allow it to independently count the meter mechanism. Reading the meter directly would be just as valuable here, of course, provided that it outputs sufficient precision to detect leaks. (and a fun project as well)

I think my time for usage was roughly 1.5 years. So pretty good overall. It takes 4 AA lithium batteries, I think less than $10 on Amazon.

$19. Apparently it is 4 AA Energizer Lithium batteries in some type of pack. Not sure if you could DIY, with just the 4 new batteries.
