I did this 2 years ago with a different smart thermostat and want to upgrade to the Nest, CA PGE - would I still be eligible to do it again?

In California (PG&E, SCE and SDG&E actually) you also have OhmConnect as an option. Giving them control to shut off your AC is totally optional, and its not a rebate you only get charged if you don't install it. You can even leave the program after installing if you really want.

do i need to return the google neast thermostat if i dont want to be enrolled with ohmconnect anymore?

No, I got unenrolled from OhmComnect automatically about a month after setting it up since I signed up for PG&E SmartRate and you can't have both. I wasn't charged for it. There's no real reason to unenroll from OhmComnect though, all it is is you earn points for using less energy during hours they tell you in advance. Them automatically adjusting your thermostat at the beginning of those times can be turned off on their website, even if you don't, it's only adjusted at the start of those hour you can adjust it back after you just dont earn points. They are kinda stingy with the points regardless, that's why after I got the thermostat I opt for PG&E smartrate instead, it's still pretty marginal but better savings than ohmconnect points.

Not sure what the other persons experience has been but I installed one for my parents… big mistake. They couldn't figure out how to use it, couldn't figure out how to connect Google Home (requirement to setup), then reset it and boiled for a day while they waited for me to go over and set it up again. It's not intuitive…

Recommendation: Nest learning thermostat.

its better get the old type thermostat for old people. The one that just slide the pin left or right.

My city is my electricity supplier and their partner programs for such discounted thermostats are poor. Last time when this deal came, I asked my friend who lives in the next town serviced by Com Ed to purchase one for me.

I believe you can purchase up to two units once every 2-3 years. I am unsure if it varies depending on location.

The alternative is no discount at all. Complaining about getting $100 off instead of $159 just reeks of egotism. They can always move to another state and get a free Nest if they feel like it.

Just read the fine print before you participate in these schemes.

I would think the utility companies would know your usage without having to look at your thermostat. The thermostats are coming in sealed from the manufacturer so the only way the utility companies can see your settings is if you give them access.
