In Fairbanks right now and not being a d*ck, but I see most people not wearing masks here. It's not surprising they are having high rates of hospitalization here. Feel bad. I wish it was better.

For me, the fear is getting hurt while being out in nature and being put in a medical facility that is already understaffed due to current pandemic.

Everything's great when everything's great. It's the emergencies that are a problem.

Who goes to Alaska to hang around people?

Can't imagine your risk of the coof would be that high if your exploring the great outdoors or taking photos of the beautiful scenery.

In downtown Fairbanks check out a restaurant called Soba. I went a few weeks back and it was amazing.
I also went there, first time having 'Maldovan' (sp?) food. Agree it was great. I had the crusted salmon, and borscht which I hated the miserable grocery store jarred variety my parents forced on us, but Soba's was great. 🥣

In the winter months you will have a lot of darkness. Fairbanks is one of the best places to see northern lights during the winter. If that's your goal, this is a good deal. Most things around Denali will be closed.

If you plan on hiking in the Alaskan wilderness and want to check in a .44/.454/.500 magnum for personal bear defense, remember NYC is a second amendment free zone unless you're rich and famous. Checking in a legal firearm at LaGuardia, Kennedy or Newark WILL get you cuffed and arrested.
i think the people who live in and around the nyc area (outside of the state) know better than to travel to nyc and enter the airport with a firearm. possessing a handgun in the state of new york without a nyc permit or a state permit is illegal and you'll go to rikers island for sure. otherwise anyone who owns one of those handguns you mentioned probably has a permit for it if they live in state. if you are connecting thru ny, not much to worry about the transfer but never try to check-in at the counter using you have the proper permit and fyi, no out of state permits or licenses will save you. you've been warned.

when i went to ak i took 2 rifles, 2 handguns, and 1 shotgun across 3 airports and there were no problems because out west, we are free states. when you are in anc, you will see a ton of rifle cases on carts. we all have guns! Smilie

also for the record, you don't need a 44/454/500mag for bears, no one really carries those. a 45 or less is just fine. i saw more bear spray than i saw guns.

Personal experience with FAI car rental June '21… I was the first person off the plane to the car rental counter, and the agent there told me that I got "the only car" in Fairbanks, and everyone else off my plane would have to wait until vehicles were returned and cleaned. I heard about arriving travelers spending the night on the baggage area floor just waiting for a rental car. I had a great trip, but fair warning that until car inventories rise, booking one of those crazy rental rates doesn't actually guarantee you a car once you get there. YMMV, literally…
agreed. people are booking the cars for a few days and then keeping them for longer (with permission). if you can't book a car for 7 days straight, i bet you can book it for 5 and then call. when others arrive, they will find no cars.

my 8 day trip could not book consecutive days so i books 4 days and 3 days and at the counter, i had them change it to 8 days; no problem.

check out 4x4 rentals. https://www.alaska4x4rentals.com/

That is exactly what the agent at the counter told me, that the issue was people simply keeping their rentals for longer than they had originally booked. It did not occur to me that it was as you pointed out, probably they cannot initially book the number of days that they needed

yeah that's an trick from long ago in the old car rental days. as long as the extra per day is not unreasonable and the terms say you can just call it in to extended and you dont go over a month or so (whatever is in the terms), just book it and keep it. "hello, the car is due back wednesday but we're stuck on the spit down here in homer, is it ok if we return the car on friday?" Smilie

please don't share this too widely else we all start to run into "no vehicles available" more often when we first arrive. Wink

I'd pay $196 not to go to Fairbanks.

No one is carrying a 45 or less for bears. 44s are pretty much it. 410 shells, 45 colt, and 10m are all becoming more popular. But your just giving out bad info.

I've been to Fairbanks several times - it's a friendly town, but there isn't much to do in the dark months. If the weather cooperates it's one of the best places to catch the Aurora. Don't plan on going too far out of town in the winter unless you are WELL prepared - roads will be quite difficult. Stay at Pikes Waterfront Lodge - it's a good time.
There are a lot of museums for a town that size - Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, Museum of the North, Morris Thompson Cultural Center, the Ice Museum, and the Air Museum are a few that I can think of.
