A lot of bad reviews are scaring me off.

I created my own composting bins out of pallets screwed together. Still need to turn it by hand, though. I don't trust bins that don't require turning in some way. Takes about 6 months and they are always brimming full.

I had an earlier version of this. Not only didn't it compost all that well, but mice chewed their way inside and were living off of our scraps for weeks before I figured it out.

Also, if you add lawn clippings and other yard waste from a modest sized yard, these things are nowhere near large enough capacity to keep up with the rate that you generate material.

I opted to build a 3-bin design from the University of Missouri's extension office [missouri.edu]. Over the course of a summer and fall, I fill two bins with yard waste and have a third empty to turn them regularly.

Yeah, my pallet bins look like the 3-bin design, except they are 2 standalone units and have pallets for sides instead of wire mesh. Not as much airflow but still plenty between the boards. We use another pallet as the front and just lean it up against the unit. When we turn it, we just remove the front pallet and use a fork. Kind of have to dump it all out and put it back in, which is a pain, but it works.

The other problem is that I doubt it gets hot enough to kill weeds and seeds, so we try to be careful to not put those in in the first place. We often have tomato plants popping up in odd places after we spread the compost. Tomato seeds are incredibly resilient.

I've purchased this 2.5 years ago. I've been putting grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and coffee grounds. They are still there, like new. It doesn't smell, but nothing's happening inside my Aerobin.

I have had these for 3 years now. For 2 years I had great compost and anytime you opened it was super hot. Grass clippings used to reduce down to a 1/5th of their size in 2 days. This year it started acting weird and hasn't been heating up for some reason. I have to get the remaining compost out to inspect. One of the biggest advantage of this is the black gold that collects at the bottom of this bind my plants love it and yielded like crazy. Also you don't need to turn them.

I got an even better deal. The city (Orlando) hands out free compost bins to residents.

It's this Earth Machine style [orbiscorporation.com]

I see only one explanation for this. You live in a really dry area. You need to add water.

Where I live grass cuttings turn into soil in weeks.
