No subscription that I'm aware of. I installed it 2 weeks ago and it works great. Here are my thoughts:
-The wifi connect module needs to be closer than I had anticipated, and in direct view.
-Install instructions are great, just a minor blip: if the bolt adapter doesn't seem to be in the right orientation, you might have inserted the wrong end. Took me a hot second to figure that out.
-I got the 3rd Gen instead of 4th because better battery life and regular AA so lower running costs.
- better integrated with HomeKit than with Google home, which is a bit surprising.
-I've gotten very used to speaking to Siri while walking up to my house and the door is unlocked by the time I'm there. Has worked reliably for me. I have stopped carrying my keys.
That may have been true in the past, but 4th gen just came out which is smaller and doesn't need a separate connect module. Expect all 3rd gen to be clearanced out sub $100 in the immediate future

Stupid question: I just bought the lock 2 weeks ago that is installed already. Can I return the new one I receive or do they know a serial number or something?

I think you should be fine to return the new lock against the higher priced receipt.
I'm not sure if there's a subscription with this lock though ? But it did used to cost $279 when it came out

I have 2 of these and they have worked well for the past 2+ years. I had 1 wifi connect module break after 1 year however. I recently tried the Wyze smart lock for the same $100 price point and prefer that over August so far. I recommend using Eneloop AA batteries in the August lock if you want to minimize battery cost. I only have to change batteries every 6-9 months if you do not use the wifi adapter. For $100 dollars with wifi adapter, it is a good value considering I paid $200 before.
I have one and the little plastic adapter piece supplied rubs down inside the lock and then it won't open. I requested another lock from august and same thing happened. I ended up printing my own pieces but still happens
