No its dotdot for atmos. The ear level channels and height channels are interchangable, but the subwooofer ones are not. So 7.2 is seven channels (either ear level or height) and 2 subwoofer channels (really its just 1 split..but its marketing to call it .2). So this receiver can do 5.2.2 or 7.2.0. it cannot support 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 (5.1.4 would require a 9.1 receiver, and 7.1.4 would be an 11.1 channel receiver...those exist..but not in this price range).

Damn. I bought my 750h 5 months ago. I cooooould return it. But that's kind of a dick move for a perfectly working item

That's not how it works. People act like they're suddenly entitled to some to something when they pay the tiny annual fee (are you really of the mindset that the pitiful $60 actually covers the loss here?). Do you also act like you can intentionally wreck your cars because you pay for insurance?

If his device had broken 5 months ago and he returned it, that's one thing. But, to go and return it because there's suddenly a different device? "Come on, man." It's literally the reason why they changed the unlimited return policy to 90 days for electronics, because people were grossly taking advantage of it.

On the 750, I can pass through the signal from the computer to the tv without actually turning on the avr. Computer is plugged into avr, avr plugged into tv.

This is simply not true. The 90 day return policy applies to TV's and computers not all electronic devices. Almost all other electronics including receivers and even game consoles can be returned under the general "forever" policy.

Any predictions on whether this is likely to be cheaper in the next 6 months or so? Like many here I'm looking to replace an ancient Onkyo, but am getting by running all my HDMI devices direct to the TV so could wait a bit if it's likely to save me money.

Assuming it's the same as it's predecessor, yes! Can use airplay or Bluetooth. Or, even better, the little know Spotify Connect protocol, for the highest quality. Once on the same network, you'll see the receiver in your Spotify list of playback devices, and once selected it will start playing to the receiver, even turning it on from standby if needed. It's become a must-have feature for any new audio device I buy moving forward.

I have a 13yr old Denon 7.1 receiver (AVR-987) that I'm using for my home theater. At the time, it was one of their higher end models. How does this one compare to that? Is this new one mostly beneficial just for HDMI input/output? Currently I have all my video sources hooked up directly to my TV. And just running the audio through the receiver.

Yep, this is called "PassThrough" (need to turn it on) and "Pass source" (need to select the source) in the video menu. See page 163 of the manual linked above. Can set it to either pass through the last source input when the receiver was on, or if you only want to do with with one input (say a game console) then you can fix it to that source.

Routing the video signal directly to the TV will provide the best resolution. Your old receiver has a superior amplifier, capable of handling speakers with low impedance. That's why it's 50% heavier.

Some people prefer exaggerated sound effects created by these newer receivers. I'm using pure direct with music, and the recorded surround sound format that came with the movie. The new receiver MAY provide a surround mode that's more pleasing to your ears. You need to audition the new receiver in your room to make an informed decision.

i am not the guy you quoted, but zone 2 does something different.
if you need zone 2... you need zone 2.
