If his device had broken 5 months ago and he returned it, that's one thing. But, to go and return it because there's suddenly a different device? "Come on, man." It's literally the reason why they changed the unlimited return policy to 90 days for electronics, because people were grossly taking advantage of it.

for serious audiophiles, a low end AVR won't match their speakers either...

I am glad I still had the box. One of the things they checked for was making sure the serial# on the device matched the serial# on the box.
For those wondering which is better, id say the Denon overall, but there are things Yamaha does better. Note: I am not an receiver enthusiast and rely on the built in tools (Ypao and Audyssey) to configure the system with very minor manual correction (setting everything to small, crossover to 80, etc).
The Yamaha sounds better with music, things just sound more alive and full. But the Denon sounds better with movies, tv, and gaming. I think the Denon does a better job with surround sound content because Audyssey seems better, my surrounds and bass sound more integrated into the room and with Atmos I actually get that "bubble of sound" experience that i never really noticed with the Yamaha. Im sure you can get the Yamaha to do that, but i never did with Ypao.
The Denon phone app has the whole setup menu in it, then the Heos app does streaming. The Denon app is better than MusicCast in terms of AV management, but i do like MusicCast more for streaming over the Heos app. I've had the Heos app crash a few time on android already.
The Yamaha turned on faster on cold boot (via CEC instruction), but i always got ~5 seconds of silence after unpausing internal LG apps via eARC. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH THE DENON!!!! this is huge for me, that silence was utterly infuriating and i was always playing with the rewind on streaming services to hear the whole thing.
And finally of course, the Denon actually has real HDMI 2.1.
So anyone on the fence...if you're using this mostly for tv/movies/gaming I think you'll have a better experience with the Denon, but if you're mostly music focused you might wanna stick with the Yamaha until more options emerge.

Notably, testing has shown that these units have fully functional HDMI 2.1, including full support for Xbox Series X and PS5 at 4k 120hz. 8k, 7.2CH., 75W, Dolby Atmos, HEOS, Bluetooth, 6 HDMI inputs, typical other inputs/outputs.
There is no online link because it is not listed on the costco.com website yet, nor has Denon published any documentation on them.
However, they are real, in stock, and the best value in AVR's right now.
What makes this a Slickdeal is the fact that they are in stock (during the chip shortage), at a reasonable non-inflated price, and they are quality for the HDMI 2.1.

Alternatively, the factory refurbished AVR-S960H-R is on sale at Denon.com for $550:
https://www.denon.com/en-us/produ...vr-s960h-r
The AVR-S960H-R has 90W and may have the older HDMI chipset, unsure. Also, the 960 appears to have component input and a second HDMI output.
Now if someone can help me find a reasonably priced Xbox Series X, my home theater will be complete!

Does this receiver support using a phone app for setup? If so, anyone got a link to the iOS version?
Thanks!
