The shell dissolves eventually. I use osmocote in my aquariums for plant food. It takes a long time but they eventually dissolve completely.

Osmocote Plant Food consists of a nutrient granule coated with semi-permeable resin.

The empty shell remains after nutrients are released.

Some reviews mention concerns over these resin shell left behind.

Resin is the same stuff pots are made of so it's like having pots within pots.

This is a time release plant food, so it will not burn the plants and releases slowly over time. I am no fertilizer expert, but this stuff works great, and is kind of idiot-proof. Smilie
