Not sure about buying these "in bulk" but I've bought no-name cheap base plates before and they're terrible - pieces don't stay locked in, so everything just falls/pops off. YMMV with those. In my experience, it's not worth the gamble. Just pay a few extra bucks to get the name brand for this particular item.
One word of advice...when gluing down, have a Lego brick with you so that you properly space the plates. If you put two plates tightly side by side, you will not be able to put a brick that spans both plates. Because of where the furthest stud is on each plate, there should be a tiny gap!

Looks like a decent deal.

I was recently thinking of building a diy lego table for my kids. Is this the product to go for when looking for base plates? I assume the less expensive off brands are hit or miss?

Is there a more cost effective way to get a bunch of base plates that I might be overlooking?

Thanks for the input. Reading some reviews of the off brand ones seem like you get what you pay for.

5 bucks for a piece of plastic. Wow. I got lucky at a yard sale a few years ago and got a huge box of various Lego for $20. I thought they were asking too much, then found out later how much it is new! Glad I bought it… probably thousands of dollars worth of legos in there.
In general for bulk bins anything under $7-$8/lb is a good deal, though most people try to sell for ridiculous prices like $12-$14. The more minifigures the better, many of those go for $5/each , I remember getting one 36lb bin and they had about 70 or so minifigures in it. that was a good one. For specific legos and box sets obviously the price will be very different.

Been there done that! Don't buy generics you will repent later.

Check Dollar Tree. They make their own base plates that are compatible and actually thicker than Lego. I got brown, blue, and green for a buck a piece.

The Dollar Tree ones are high quality. Thicker than Lego.

My kids broke the Lego plates rather quickly. The thick ones on Amazon lasted though.

If you do build a table you can just glue the plates down with wood glue. That's what I did and years later they are still holding.
