Pretty solid deal for the price - the only thing it seems to be missing is USB C charging.

I just started looking for a ~$500 laptop for a relative, so maybe I'm a bit out of touch with what to expect. I'm not sure it is worth recommending this for a bit over their budget based on middling reviews on the screen and what is probably not much of a noticeable speed increase over the average ratings of the i3 model.

Put together well, feels solid - but plastic.
I like the keyboard action and font on it. Extremely legible.
Just going by the specs, this would be marginally quicker in single core, but then it has twice the core count for multi-threaded work. Realistically, unless your relative has specific needs to be met any modern laptop (with a solid state drive) will serve them just fine.

Or if I can just find something closer to the $400 mark that is just as well suited for their needs.

I do agree that cheaper computers may well serve their needs. In the case where people offer up the typical Gateway "slim" options, please note that these Asus are, physically, built much better than those are. Those otherwise work fine.

Low resolution, HDD (you could upgrade since you already did before) but very cheap

i5, 256 SSD, 8gb , 1920x1080p, good price
The Office Depot laptop is a better deal because it has 16gb of ram vs 8gb in BestBuy laptop.
Why would they pay more for less?
If the "relative" needs bigger text, that can be adjusted in the settings menu.
PS: i5-1135g7 is quite a good processor with a decent igpu.

He is linking to a different laptop than the OP which is only 1600 x 900.
Also his are both 17" and the BB one is an i5, which is rated about significantly faster than the i3 in the OP.
Thanks essix8, that BB one I have recommended for now if they want to move on it right away. It isn't the most amazing thing I've ever seen, but for an i5 17" with SSD is isn't horrible.
Wait one more month and laptops with these specs (and better) will be available for around $300 on Black Friday.
The only laptop currently available that I'd call a legitimate bargain is the $349 Gateway from Walmart. It's not perfect, but a Quad-Core with 16gb Ram for $349 is very good. Yes, build quality is a bit cheap, but if you care for it properly it'll last.
Still, I'd recommend waiting til Black Friday.

Physically, it is built as cheaply as they could get away with - before it starts to bend and break things inside.
I used it for light cad work, web browsing, photo culling/online back up etc while away from my much more capable desktop. I'd still be using the laptop had it not been stolen in Costa Rica. That said, I'm looking for something beefier to replace it because I may be on the road for quite a while - it was not a desktop replacement by any means.

Was yours the lesser Celeron version or an i3 or Ryzen version?
if it was the F512 version, that one especially has a screen with terrible viewing angles. ASUS has improved screen quality SLIGHTLY on their budget laptops from the F513 forward (at least the viewing angles are better). I would advise anyone thinking of buying an ASUS vivobook to go look at Amazon and YouTube reviews for the specific model you're considering. If the screen quality is important to you, you really need to know what you're getting. If this one uses the same screen as the F513, then it's an "average" display with decent viewing angles. They're putting OLED displays in the K513, but that's not a budget model. There are a zillion different models with similar model numbers, potential buyers should always research the reviews first!
Also, they have two different types of keyboards in their vivobook models. In my opinion the ones with the highlighted ENTER key (like this one) are the better ones.
