I can think of a couple situations where you would need to have a Smart switch that is integrated into the wall and outlet, but considering you can get a removable smart switch plug for a normal outlet for about $6 this doesn't seem like that great of a deal.

Agreed - I have a bunch of TP-Link smart plugs for seasonal use that aren't loading up my 2.4 Ghz band for the rest of the year. I personally don't have a compelling use case for an in-wall smart outlet - the only use I could see is if space was at a premium, and the depth of the smart plug added to the depth of the plugged in device couldn't be accommodated behind a piece of furniture or some other space restriction.
