I am using Raspberri PI 3 and Openmediavalut to store data and remotely synching using Winscp.
And I stayed at a holiday inn express last night, equally relevant

Thanks OP! Seems to do the job as a Plex Server + Data Server. Will see if I can use it for the Arlo Cams.

I've been using this for almost a year now for automatic mobile phone backup, network access to my computer file backups/pictures, Plex Server, and it's been super solid. It is capable of connecting to a UPS power supply to automatically shut off when the power goes out. I added this 4gig stick too with no problems (total 6gigs)

Samsung 4GB DDR4 PC4-21300,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HJB2...b_ap_share

Definitely recommend this for someone who just needs a simple NAS with a easy to use interface with great bells and whistles.

Do you know if it can also be used to seed torrents, in addition to Plex box?

How does this work as a replacement for Google photos and files backup for a family of 4? How much hard disk do you suggest? Is it worth to do raid at all? I plan to do a regular encrypted backup to some cloud service.

Good review and thanks for the link to the memory- picked one up yesterday when I noticed Walmart still had the pricing after Amazon sold out

Not sure why you got downvoted for a completely reasonable question. Yes, what you describe is a perfectly typical use case.

You don't need raid necessarily, but if (when) a single drive fails, you'll lose any data that isn't still on your phones or hasn't yet been backed up to a cloud service.

The biggest achievement this statement recognizes is that RAID≠backup. For a NAS, RAID choices which provide redundancy facilitate the use of non-NAS hard drives (allowing you to swap in desktop drives, which might experience a higher failure rate in 24/7 NAS operation). At the same time, none of these things (NAS or RAID) provide a complete backup solution so something offsite (a cloud service) and/or offline (like a separate USB hard drive) remain a critical part of the solution. Sounds like you're on the path to getting those pieces together.

If you do go the Synology route, the interface makes enabling RAID simple without even restricting yourself to some of the rules of traditional RAID arrays (using Synology Hybrid RAID aka SHR). Check out their online calculator for more information: https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...calculator

Good luck!

Thanks for the link. If I am going through the effort of creating a home cloud solution, I want to get it right the first time. I will stick with the 3-2-1 strategy.

Here's a link for those who are unfamiliar with the terminology: The 3-2-1 Backup Strategy [backblaze.com]

Good luck!
