I didn't see any conditions around membership status in the terms. I was paying month to month, but canceled it right before adding the code to my account. It extended my membership 12 months from the date when my monthly membership was scheduled to end.

Big warning on Instacart and Costco:
From my experience (about a year ago), I found that -- even with an Express discount -- Costco markups varied wildly, and seemed to average around 20% (!). Given a typical Costco tab, that can really add up in a painful way, especially with tip on top.

Interestingly, Instacart doesn't markup Wal-mart stuff at all, so when ordering from them you just pay the delivery fee + service charge + tip.

Thank you. I've been interested in delivery from Costco but have also read exactly the same experience you posted.

I could accept 10% but 20% markup is just too much.

I've found Insta to be expensive for Costco haul and I use it only for certain Asian grocer or Restaurant Depot but for Wally and anybody else, I most choose pickup.
The Costco markup on pricing makes it useless for me.

I started using Instacart out of necessity when the pandemic hit, but would've never dreamed of paying a premium for grocery delivery before. I figured others may be in similar situations and might stand to benefit from this deal. I will second Walmart since pickup is free and to your point they don't markup their items.

I will say, I was shocked at how inflated the prices were on Instacart when I placed my first few orders. Out of curiosity, I compared a few of my orders to in store prices based on my previous receipts. The biggest difference I saw was nearly 40% when including taxes, fees and tip. I believe it was due to the massive influx of orders and the supply chain issues impacting stores' inventory (every delivery timeslot had a fee associated with it, even with instacart express). I find that it's closer to ~20% markup on average, and I think there are still some items worth buying in bulk from Costco even with the delivery premium. Needless to say, I look forward to the day when I no longer have a need for Instacart.

Edit: I forgot to mentionβ€”when I didn't have instacart express, I found that going to Costco.com and clicking same day delivery to shop instacart through their website was actually cheaper than going to instacart directly because the items weren't as marked up (~2-10% difference per item). That was still the case when I first signed up for instacart express, but now it seems that it's changed so it's cheaper to go through the instacart website to shop for Costco items if you have an instacart express membership.

use sameday.costco.com , cheaper than isntacart.com and no need for a separate instacart membership to get free delivery.

To clarify, if you just want to order from Costco, as a member, instacart delivery is free over $35. The prices vary wildly and if you have the time, it's best to see what's the best deal between mail order, 2-day, and same-day.

Instacart user here. Like many others, started using when pandemic started (didn't really step into a grocery store, Target, or Costco until May/June 2021). Can confirm prices on Instacart are higher for Costco on the app than in store. Example, their 2 pack of bagels are $5.99 in store, and just checked, $7.45 on Instacart (almost 25% markup).

Definitely not worth it for Costco, but some/most stores are not marked up compare to the in-store prices. The main difference, however, is that the weekly ads for the grocery stores are not always matched/reflected on Instacart, so you end up paying regular price sometimes for things that should be on sale .

I mainly use Instacart now for Asian grocery stores that are slightly too far from the house (I'm fortunate enough to have both 99 Ranch and H-Mart available to order from), and Walmart (so I don't have to step into the local Walmart; nothing against Walmart, it's just my closet one is not located in a nice area and is always... "crowded").

As others pointed out, it's 20% more expensive, may be even more than going to store. I still order from instacart as life is super busy now and losing an hour is not an option anymore. But I really wish costco didn't charge that markup (Walmart doesn't as others also pointed out)
