The launch switches are special because they are a dying breed of easily hackable switch devices (new models like patched, Mariko, Switch Lite, and OLED require modchips). You can hack it by using an "rcm jig" (a piece of copper wire in a joycon rail slider) which will exploit the nvidia tegra recovery mode (rcm) particular to these old models and allow full access to the internals of the device by pushing a payload file. This will allow you to install custom firmware and use homebrew software as well as play pirated games.

Technically you can use a paperclip to enter recovery mode but we are no longer cavemen and rcm jigs are readily available for the price of a McChicken on Amazon and Ebay.
This seems like a great trade in deal but I think I'll be keeping my V1 unpatched Switch. It's starting to become rare. 🧐
Special but there's like 6 million of them. You might get another $100 if you're lucky.

Not true.

"Patched" just means the ipatches they apply at the factory which cannot be applied afterwards, so if it's "unpatched" it's hackable forever regardless of what firmware it's on, see https://arstechnica.com/gaming/20...-hackable/

They allowed me to connect to their store wifi and do the transfer in store. Be sure to YouTube GameExplain's transfer tutorials for data and ACNH transfers. There were 2 others doing the same thing as me. Just call ahead and make sure they are okay with you doing it in-store.
Thank you! I only read about it during launch day (and that it wasn't working). I'm glad they added that feature in later.

I just traded in my joycons to buy new ones. For $260, I would've traded in the whole thing. Oh well. At least I have a V1 with new Joy cons now.
What was wrong with the old joycons? And what was the price difference for the new ones?

I've never traded anything in at GS before and may just jump on this one with my OG Switch.

On a side note, I also have an Xbox One X Scorpio Edition that's been having some issues with the HDMI port, does anyone know if GS will take this for a trade-in? And if so, is it the full value trade-in or do they only do partial value?

Thanks in advance!
You'll get $330 for the XB1X (also has a bonus promo) if they don't detect the HDMI issue. If they find the HDMI issue, I don't think they'll take it. Don't say anything and pretend like it's fine. Also when trading in, be sure to bring a HDMi cable for them.

Dont think FW 4.1.0 is an issue with unpatched units. It's either unpatched or patched from nintendo.
Okay so when it means unpatched it means physically being patched from Nintendo. Not the software update patches? That clears it up more thanks. I may just keep it then haha.

Missing RCM jig, large SD card and loading what ever alternate firmware you want. Want linux or android or a new reason to wear an eye patch?

Wish I could've traded in before my oled switch came today. I read you needed both switch to transfer data? It was the only reason keeping me from trading it with the $220 value last week.
That is true you need both to transfer successfully

Nothing wrong with them. Just had another pair from a $25 Walmart misprice. Originally they were giving $22/Joycon, before the 50% promo bonus.

Anyone knows when the promotion runs until? Want to hold onto it until OLED version is here to do transfer. Thanks.

Can someone confirm what's actually required to trade in? Power adapter and dock as well, or just the Switch console and LR Joy-cons?

It's a promo. Employee's didn't even know about it, and didn't know how long it was running.
