Perfect example of ignorance is bliss. Feel free to enjoy your "compact wireless speaker that sounds fantastic". Just don't come on here and proclaim they are better than floorstanding speakers in the same product line without any facts because they have "many many more features".

I'm pretty sure if one of the leading authorities on sound reproduction research (Dr. Floyd Toole) decided to go through the expense and effort of hanging 150lbs., full sized speakers on his wall they probably do actually sound better than their bookshelf counterparts. And yes, he does integrate them with subs so they are not running full range even though they are one of the true full range floorstanding speakers that don't cost more than a house. Like I said, the only benefit to bookshelf speakers is if you need to actually put them on a bookshelf or wall.

I owned the Polk RTi150s as well as the bookshelfs/dipole set as well as the center that was just leagues ahead of its time...

That said I don't think those JBLs would be "better."

I don't own the 580s...I do have the 590s...and while those produce a nice wall of sound that the Polks couldn't..they would do so at the loss of that silky smooth detail from the Polk's tweeter.

I'm really interested in this as well.. I'm running a mixed system right now.. I hope some of you seriously die hard home theater people can chime in... Running:

Polk RTi150 towers
LSiM706c
FXi5 bipole surround
Polk Atmos in ceiling x 4
JBL 530 for front height
Infinity rs152 rear surround.
Monolith 15 subwoofer

My question is... Are these JBL 580s going to be a substantial upgrade to my Polk RTi150 from 10 years ago?

or would I benefit most from upgrading to Klipsch RP series (5.1) that are on sale at Adorama?

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

You already have the studio 530's...that should give you a general idea of how these are going to sound...except these will be biggah

These seem to be the one case of 'meh' in the lineup as the woofer size can't keep up with the bigger compression tweeter that's shared with the 590. BUT....

It's the perfect option for a center channel to park between two 590s!

It depends what you think of the 150's?

What "substantial upgrade" are you looking for over the Polk's?

Is there an issue with your frankie 9.1.4 setup that needs a "substantial upgrade"?

As someone pointed out since you have the 530's. You can use them as your fronts to get an idea of what these would sound like to you.

Could you clarify? I'm pretty sure the 580 is actually the ideal speaker in the Studio 5 series. 6.5" is supposedly just around the ideal mid range driver when paired with a subwoofer especially considering the Studio 5s are a 2.5 way design. If you're going for a pure 2 channel, yeah I think the 590s are better. I can't cite exactly where I remember reading this from but I'm pretty sure Greg Timbers who designed the 5 series and some of JBL's other speakers said the 580 was his favorite speaker of the line!

I second this. The most amazing aspect of any of the 5 series (I use 530s as nearfield desktop speakers and 590s as home theater LRs) is their ability to image like no other speaker I've heard. I haven't heard anything decently expensive (I.e. over 3000 USD for a pair) but I can't imagine anything in this price class beating out the 5 series' ability to set a magical soundstage.

It's highly dependent! Depends on your application (are you trying to hide near trim/baseboards) and how far do you need to make the run. Some people will argue speaker wire makes a massive difference but honestly since most people running these are doing so off an off the shelf AVR I doubt anything fancy will make a marginal improvement. There's a chart you can Google that tells you the necessary wire gauge/thickness you'll need depending on how long the speaker cable needs to be. Personally I bought my own cable from Monoprice and just screw-in type banana plug connectors and they work great!

Necessary disclaimer that I haven't listened to the Arena series of speakers. But there's a reason why the JBL 5 series is infamous. It was designed by the same acoustic engineer who has made some of JBL's most expensive residential speakers and shares some of that heritage. I'm biased since after my long search for home theater speakers I landed on these but I just wanted to say the Arena line was never mentioned as a contender let alone a rival to the 5 series. While I'm sure it might actually be better as a party speaker since it has larger woofers than the 580 (and the same size as the bigger 590) and I'm pretty sure I've seen it in sales for quite a bit cheaper… I personally would go 5 series all day long without a doubt. I can't finally compare since like I said I've never owned an Arena series but the biggest advantage of the 5 series IMO is the soundstage reproduction. If you close your eyes, it's impossible to tell that the sound is coming from just two speakers. I have the center speaker as well but it's mostly disabled and people are blown away when I show them that what they're perceiving as a center isn't even on.

I have the 570s and 590s at home, the 570s are great, the 590s greater in every way, but the 580s have gotten mixed love due to them having the 590s compression driver and not the 590s dual, 2.5-way 8s. It's probably just a matter of the 590 'tweeter' being too much for dual 6.5s to keep up with.

BUT it's probably nothing room correction couldn't account for, even my 590s sound markedly better after Audyssey XT32 runs the calibration, astoundingly so. If you're not using room correction you'll likely care- if you're using competent room correction you'll likely never know unless switching between bypass/pure mode and stereo.
