HIFIMAN offers great deals on open-box products. Those products are tested and in good condition but don't meet HIFIMAN's standard as brand new.
Open-box products also come with HIFIMAN's standard 1-year warranty as brand new products and if you are not satisfied with the product for any reason, you can return the item in 30 days.

As I am sure you are aware, Sundara's are a Planar where the HD have dynamic drivers, so there's going to be diffs there. I personally do not suggest to get the Sundara, not so much for the sound profile which is good, but for the abysmally bad QC by Hifiman. I bought the Sundara 2020 rev and had to return after 3 weeks. Absolute dumpster fire build and QC wise. Yeah there's going to be that one fool that has to reply "but mine are good!" OK good for you.. unfortunately in the vast majority of cases, their QC is horrible. Stay away from these or anything Hifiman. Cheap Chinese garbage.

I guess I am the fool to say mine are good.

You have to realize people who have defects are more likely to post and tell their story on how bad things are.

Personally I felt like the risk was worth the reward as long as you can rma/return it. Going on 1.5 years strong.

This will be the only time you'll ever see me defend a company but...... There's also going to be one fool who thinks their QC issue is indicative of a majority of the brands products having the same issue. I've had several HiFiMan headphones and none have ever had issues. I'd be willing to bet the VAST MAJORITY of purchasers haven't either. But the squeaky wheel gets the grease so the people complaining are always going to be heard over the people quietly enjoying a solid purchase they made. Not saying they don't have issues at all but don't act like 9 out of 10 of their headphones are sold broken either.

Had issues recently with an Amazon open box that I had to return (one earcup not working, tried replacement cable). Pulled the trigger on one directly from HiFiman, so fingers crossed!

In, with another year of extended warranty via credit card. Will it help 3 years from now? No, but hey, it's something. Excited to try this vs my existing 6xx which has only really been "alright" for me with the choices it makes. Yes I have a dac/amp. Though I mostly use IEMs sometimes I just don't wanna stick em in my ears :p

I've been using hifiman for years, I NEVER had a QC issue...btw, there customer service is great and they reply quickly. I personally wouldn't choose the sundara, I'd say save your money and get the ANANDA - this video is helpful: https://youtu.be/-x-ftESnSL8

Any time hifiman headphones are posted the qc issue immediately comes up. I personally am very happy with my 400i headphones I got from them, but I can see why people would have issues in that regard. They really don't inspire confidence when in hand compared to some other brands and a fair number of people report rma's and write them off completely. Personally I disagree with this opinion because where hifiman does very well is sound quality for the price.

Love your passion. I would suggest if qc is an issue then use the warranty. If you have any input on saving money or deals that would be on topic.

I'm fairly certain this is the normal open box price. They run sales every month or 2 so you can get another $20-30 off and Headphones . com and Apos will match that price (also no tax and free s/h). Directly through Hifiman the sales will usually work considerably longer than the advertised window.

These will 100% go on sale within the next 2 months (probably sooner than later) but you may be able to get a sale price match now if you just ask a rep from Hifiman or the other 2 retailers I mentioned.

This is literally the exact thing you're doing but on the other side.

Personally I preordered the Poseidon. Just beware of 35% restocking fee on kickstarter

Reviews just dropped today from Youtuber's / influencers and the consensus seems to be they're very good but about on the level of the Sundara with a different sound signature. Passion for Sound, Cheap Audio Man, Zeos, and likely other YouTuber's have reviews up. Though if you don't get the Kickstarter special they go up to $435 which puts them in the DT1990 price bracket.

Personally I would wait until more reputable reviewers like Resolve and Crinacle get a hold of it and ordinary people who didn't receive it for free, but by then it will likely be significantly more expensive @ $435 so it's a tough dilemma if you're on the fence.

I pre-ordered it. Hopefully I like them

I have had the opposite experience. I tried two sets of 400i's that both had issues and I did try the Sundara and one side plug was not soldered in all the way and the driver cut out. They sounded great, but I am not at a point where a $350 pair of headphones is disposable after a year. Maybe I was the unlucky one and I am sure the failure rate is not 90%, but given my sample size it was not worth it for me. I have had my HD650's for about 10 years now and all they have needed are pads.
