My Costco had the Wagyu Ribeye for half off yesterday. I was tempted at the original $100/lb price, but finally grabbed some this time.

This is the Superior, CO store. Seems like some stores are already out of stock and others aren't on clearance yet. For those with stock at full price, I'm guessing they'll go on clearance at some point soon. The * on the price tag means it is discontinued and will no longer be restocked, so for stores with no stock you might be out of luck. The price ending in .97 means it's a manager special, so other stores with stock may or may not follow suit unfortunately.

This item doesn't appear to be on the Costco website so the required link is to an older deal when this first showed up in stores.

What are you doing cruising SD if you think $50/lb for beef is a hot deal? Seriously, I'm super interested to know. Which of the following describes you...
  1. I live for today with little concern for the future. I have very little that's entirely my own and not being mortgaged, leased, or financed in some other way. I have lot of disposable income that I freely dispose of on things like Wagyu beef.
  2. I have lots of income and savings. Most things I own I actually own, not just hold title to, and as such I have little debt. I have a plan for my retirement that is fully funded and that leaves me enough money to occasionally splurge on life's little luxuries.
  3. I am an Internet troll.

If you pay this much for meat, I question your sanity. It just isn't worth it.

No different than buying a luxury car or a $10K speaker. I actually think $50/lb is not that bad considering my local grocery store sells their top of the line regular Black Angus steak @ $28/lb. Also if you go to a decent restaurant you pay roughly $50 for your steak anyway (except they will give you some veggie and a drink Smilie).

I don't understand any of the arguments here.

Wagyu beef is Wagyu beef. It's expensive for a reason, and if it's not worth it to you, just pass on the deal. It is quite literally an experience and meal in one, I for one would pay $50 for 1lb(a meal for two easily, with sides) just to try it. $25/ea is not really out of the realm of a mid-priced dinner at a restaurant.

It's insanely easy to cook and just as good as everyone says. Nobody is replacing their chuck steaks with it, that's just stupid. As a once a year meal, it's well worth it. If you can't justify it or afford it even as that, just skip it. Is that difficult or something?

I am a pretty cheap person and definitely extraordinarily far from wealthy, but I would absolutely get a pound at this price for a special meal. This is literally two full price movie tickets in most big cities.
Can you describe what makes it so tasty? Is it the marbling and fat? I tend to like leaner cuts.

It is like butter. I thought that was an exaggeration but it's true. It is like equal fat and meat, but it's not fat like a normal steak. The fat melts at just above room temperature.

It's really something special.

Just checked the westsiiiide Jacksonville, FL store since I've been eyeing these since they were stocked a few months back. They had moved from the endcap to an open freezer next to crab legs and scallops, and sadly were still $99/lb. The 12 or so packages were all over 2lb and quite a few looked to be developing some ice crystals on the meat. Not looking like this store will get the markdown. Maybe next year I'll split a smaller package with a friend.

Later,

option 1 would be me. with jokes aside, im a foodie and resturants that i can afford to go, I would never be able to afford this kind of beef. I reside in houston,tx. and texas is one of those states that have cheap beef. with that being said, real kobe at a restuarant would be a place called B&B butchers which is the only place I know has the license to sell real wagyu beef. as price wise.... its $40-50 per ounce. so being cheap and all, i refer to cooking it on my own instead. $50/lbs is pretty steep for some folks who dont eat steak often, but last time i check (last month) my resource sent a quote for misakyi beef at 1300 for 6 lbs. so yeah once in a while i would dispose this amount for beef. but i would never spend over 100 dollars on shoes and would prefer to wear the 6 pack fruit loom t-shirts for the next 4 years.
First off, i find people who call themselves "foodie" to not know what they are talking about when it comes to food. People who really know their foods, would never ever call themselves a foodie.
Second, the rest of your info confirms my statement above. B&B Butchers is definitely not the only place "licensed" to sell authentic Japanese wagyu. I have friends who owns high end japanese restaurants in Houston. It's just not true. There is a place in Dallas that also makes this claim. It's bogus.

Has anyone been able to confirm any other location outside of Colorado that has this price?

https://houston.eater.com/2016/7/...tification. i tried searching for more beef cert. but only B&B showed up for HOUSTON. like most, restaurant advertise KOBE beef but dont have a cert for it. now dont get me wrong, some restaurant (kata robata) has a supplier who own a beef cert. but often times you dont know if you really getting the real deal. having a cert just further proving you are serving real wagyu. and wagyu is a type of breed. just the how it was graded by the JPN dictates its price. texas can raise waygu, kobe, black angus, etc its the official cert. is what important. and can you imagine you paid for something to later find out it wasn't the actual thing you paid for? especially in the seafood world.
